Once upon a time, Alex O’Loughlin was a serious contender for the role of James Bond before Daniel Craig nabbed it. Now he is best known for his role as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-O, a reboot of the 1968 hit show of the same name.

Alex is more than just an actor though, he is also a director and producer. Since his debut in the industry in 2001, he has gone on to appear in the supernatural television series Moonlight, the medical show Three Rivers, and the films – Oyster Famer and The Back-up Plan, which also starred Jennifer Lopez.

Alex O’Loughlin was born on the 24th of August, 1976 in Canberra, Australia where he also grew up. His mother was a nurse while his father was an astronomy and physics teacher. When he was a child, he suffered from OCD – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

In 1999, Alex enrolled in NIDA, National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. He graduated from the school in 2002 with a Bachelor of Dramatic Art program degree. Other notable alumni from NIDA include Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Mel Gibson, Katherine Langford, Luke Hemsworth, Hugo Weaving, and Sam Worthington.

The actor is of Scottish and Irish descent.

Career

Alex O’Loughlin got his start by working in short films and theatre while he was a teenager. After graduating from NIDA, he appeared in several Australian films and television series, including White Collar BlueBlackJack: Sweet Science, and Love Bytes. 

He got his first lead role in the 2004 film Oyster Farmer where he played a criminal who steals money to pay his sick sister’s medical bills. After Oyster Farmer, he appeared in Man-Thing, The Incredible Journey of Mary BryantFeed, and The Shield. He was nominated by the Australian Film Institute Awards as Best Lead Actor in Television for his role in The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant. He has also been nominated for the Most Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series at the Logie Awards.

As previously mentioned, the Australian actor was also a contender for the role of James Bond, going as far as screen testing for the role. Alex has called it the most comprehensive screen test he has ever done mentioning that he received haircuts, suit cuts, tuxedos and was flown to London for the screen test. Though he did not get the role, one can assume that it was a good experience.

Alex later starred in Moonlight on CBS, where he played a vampire/private investigator. The show, while not a ratings hit, was a fan favorite. When the show was initially supposed to be canceled, fans rallied and the pressure caused the network to give it an additional four episodes. Despite being the highest-rated series in its showing slot, the show was still canceled after one season. To get the show renewed, fans held blood drives and a fan-based charity campaign; unfortunately, all their efforts proved unsuccessful.

Next, the actor guest-starred in a season four episode of Criminal Minds, as Vincent Rowlings – a serial killer with OCD – showing the actor has an acting range in the roles he takes. After this, he was cast in the leading role as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-O, which has been the biggest hit of his career so far. The show has not only been successful but also long-running, spanning several seasons.

Personal Life

In 1997, Alex O’Loughlin’s had a son, Saxon, with his girlfriend at the time. He later entered a relationship with Holly Valance – an Australian singer and actress, best known for her single “Kiss Kiss”, and her appearance as Christie Miller in the film DOA: Dead Or Alive. The two separated in 2009 after many years together.

He later began a relationship with Malia Jones, an American model and surfer. The two had their first child together in 2012. Alex and Malia then got married on the 18th of April, 2014. Alex, Malia and their children live in Hawaii for now as Alex films Hawaii Five-0.

Alex is also an ambassador for Donate Life America – a not-for-profit alliance of national organizations.

Height, Weight & Body Measurements 

The Australian actor’s listed height is 6 ft 0¾ in (185 cm), his present weight is 79 kgs (174lbs) and his other body measurements are Chest – 42 in (107 cm), Arms / Biceps – 15 in (38 cm) and Waist – 32 in (81 cm).

Alex maintains his physique by practicing karate, heavy lifting, exercising, and circuit training. He works out five days a week and makes sure to mix up his routines to include several exercises like interval training, trail running, and surfing.

He also puts a lot of effort into eating healthy as well. While his meals vary, they also often include oatmeals, almonds, bananas, healthy carbs, fresh vegetables, reduced-fat milk, and protein.
