Early Life
Javier Solis was born as Gabriel Siria Levario in Mexico City, Mexico on September 1, 1931. He was born to Mexican parents – Francisco Siria Mora and his wife Juana Levario Plata. His father worked as a butcher as well as a baker while his mother was a trader. Life wasn’t all rosy for Solis as his father abandoned them when he was still very young. His mother, not being able to cope, also left Solis with his uncle Valentin and his wife Angela Lopez Martinez whom Solis grew up to consider as his real parents.
Before he became a teenager, Solis had already dropped out of school so he could work and support his family. He attended Tacubaya Primary School and after he left school; Solis tried out so many things, including picking glass and bones, as well as working as a supermarket transport agent. He also worked as a butcher, carpenter, baker, car washer, and trained as an amateur boxer. However, he wasn’t successful in his endeavors. But he sure had one thing that he was good at and that was music for which he later became a star.
Career Beginnings
When he was working as a butcher, Solis often participated in singing competitions, and on one occasion; his boss heard him sing and was so impressed by his untapped talent. From that moment, he helped Solis by recommending a voice coach while paying for his music lessons. When he was sixteen, Javier Solis went to the city of Puebla where he started singing with the Mariachi Metepec. However, the young singer didn’t find his breakthrough until two years later when he was discovered by Alfredo Gill and Juilto Rodriguez who are members of the famous Latino music group called Los Panchos.
The stars helped the upcoming Solis to secure a record deal after an audition at CBS Records. He signed a deal with the CBS Record in 1950 after which he dropped his first album later the same year. Two years later, he released his first hit song titled Lioraras. While the song became commercially successful, his producer Felipe Valdez Leal went on to give him the stage name Javier Solis.
Rise to Prominence
After his first single was met with commercial success, Solis started garnering international attention; thus, featuring in music tours in Central America, South America, and the United States until 1957. Solis’ songs gained wide popularity courtesy of his music style which include the boleros, corridos, waltzes, ranchera, and danzones, among others. Some of his hit songs include Amanceci En Tus Brazos, Sombras, Payaso, Vereda Tropical, and En Mi Viejo San Juan, just to mention a few.
In 1959, the talented singer began his acting career; he appeared in over 20 movies between 1959 and 1966. Solis worked together with other stars including Maria Victoria, Pedro, Armendariz, and Antonio Aguilar, among others. His last movie was released just one year before his demise. He was regarded as one of the Three Mexican Roosters who made giant strides in Mexican music and cinemas alongside Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete.
Final Years and Cause of Death
In 1957, following the death of his co-star, Pedro Infante, who died in a plane crash in Merida, Yucatan, Solis’ popularity skyrocketed. Between 1961 and the year he died, Solis released twelve songs that dominated the Mexican charts. The young artist was later diagnosed with gallbladder infections and needed to undergo surgery to remove them.
Seven days before his death, Javier Solis performed his song titled Perdoname Mi Vida during a television show. Meanwhile, when the show was going on; Solis was constantly making pain gestures. Although he underwent the cholecystectomy, the surgery turned out to be unsuccessful. He had complications and also lost his life in the process. He died in Mexico City and his death occurred on April 19, 1966.
Interestingly, before his death, Solis got married to a lady named Blanca Estela Saenz. Blanca was a dancer whom he met while performing at a local bar called Teatre Lirico in Mexico City. There is no information about his wife’s background and the amazing couple didn’t have any kids prior to his death.
