Born as Anna Yuryevna Netrebko on September 18, 1971, in Krasnodar, Krasnodarskiy Kray, RSFSR, USSR, Anna is best known as a Russian soprano opera singer born to a geologist father and a mother who was a communications engineer. Like many gifted singers, Anna started singing as a child. While in high school, she sang in a travelling musical troupe and also studied piano.

Anna Netrebko actually started her singing career in the 1990s after a two-year training at a musical college after which she joined the St. Petersburg State Conservatory (then the Leningrad Conservatory). There, she worked as a janitor at the Mariinsky Theatre before she was discovered by an opera company director, Valery Gergiev. Her operatic stage debut was at the Mariinsky Theatre where she played Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. This was after she won the first prize in Russia’s prestigious Mikhail Glinka vocal competition of 1993. Although she initially wanted to be an actress, her voice teachers helped her see her beauty as a singer. With great support from her director Valery Gergiev, whom she considered as her mentor, Anna was able to take several prominent roles with the Kirov Opera to the extent that she was given the opera’s leading role, Susanna. Among her roles include Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Amina in La sonnambula, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor.

In 1995, Netrebko made her United States debut taking up the title role of Lyudmila in a San Francisco Opera production of Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila. Following her successful singing career, Netrebko became a frequent guest singer in San Francisco as she was equally known as an interpreter of other Russian operatic roles, such as Louisa in Betrothal in a Monastery, Natasha in Prokofiev’s War and Peace, and Marfa in The Tsar’s Bride.

In the 2000s, Anna performed several roles with several operas.
