ASAP Rocky – Wiki
ASAP Rocky was born to an African American mother and a Barbadian father. He was born Rakim Mayers in Harlem, Manhattan on October 3, 1988, and was named after the rapper Rakim, who was a member of the duo rap group “Eric B. & Rakim”. The rapper had an elder sister, Erika, and an elder brother too.
It was his elder brother who was his earliest rap inspiration and the biggest reason Rakim started rapping at the young age of 9. In his early teenage years, he would endure two family tragedies. First, his father went to prison in 2000 for selling drugs and his elder brother was gunned down in Harlem a year later.
These tragedies made Rakim resolve to take rapping more seriously. He moved around with his mom and sister for a while living in homeless shelters. Rakim also had a stint as a crack peddler in the Bronx when he was just 15. He eventually moved to midtown Manhattan, away from his family.
