Bellamy Young, who was adopted when she was six weeks old, was born on the 19th of February 1970. Her adoptive parents gave her the name Amy Maria Young. Her birth mother loved to sing, so upon adopting the actress, her adoptive mother tried to foster singing and a love for the creative arts in Bellamy. At the age of fourteen, she lost her father to lung cancer and was taken in by a friend of his, Bill.
When she tried to join the Screen Actors Guild, someone else was already registered with the name Amy Young, so in honor of the man who took her in, she chose the stage name, Bellamy.
Bellamy Young grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, and attended Asheville School where she graduated in 1987. Her higher education was at Yale where her first major was in Physics. However, she opted to change it to English and Theatre and in 1991, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Theatre from Yale.
Acting and Musical Career
Bellamy Young’s career started with the theatre in the 1990s. Notably, she was part of the first production of the Broadway play, The Life. She also had a couple of theatrical performances off-Broadway. In 1995, she was a recurring cast member on the show, Another World playing Dr. Courtney Evans. However, it was in the 2000s that she became a familiar face on television with appearances on shows such as The X Files, NCIS, Two and a Half Men, Drop Dead Diva, and many others. It is estimated that in the course of her career, the actress has appeared in over twenty television shows. Bellamy Young made her film debut in the 1999 crime drama Black and White, after which she subsequently landed roles in other movies.
However, she did not get her big break until 2011 when she was cast in the Shonda Rhimes’ political thriller, Scandal in the supporting role of Mellie Grant opposite Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn. Scandal is not her first role in a Shonda Rhimes’ show as she had previously been cast in guest roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice.
