Dr. Ben was born on September 18, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He didn’t grow up with a complete family because his parents were divorced and this really affected his childhood but through persistence and determination, he was able to carve a niche for himself.

He was trained by his mother Sonya Copeland who did all she could as a mother to take care of her children and her motherly affection towards them guided them on the right path.

Sonya always made them believe that there’s hope for the future and the need to believe in themselves and not indulge in leading a bad life.

Ben actually paid heed to his mother’s advice, he took his academic works seriously which made him stand out as one of the best in his class during his high school days at Southwestern High School.

During his graduation, he was honored as one of the best graduating students, and his outstanding performance made way for him to attend the University. Ben went to Yale University and studied Psychology major and he graduated in 1973.

After his graduation from Yale University, Ben Carson wanted to study further and get a degree in Medicine. He enrolled in Medical School at Michigan State University and studied medicine but also majored in neurosurgery. He obtained his master of science degree from the University of Michigan.

Professional Career

After his graduation from medical school, Dr. Ben Carson became a certified neurosurgeon and he was offered employment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Ben worked there as a resident neurosurgeon and based on their excellent performance, he became a hotspot for International hospitals. At that time, neurosurgeons are being sought after because there were just a few doctors who specialized in this field of medicine. Dr. Ben Carson was invited in 1983 to work at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia.

However, after a few months of practicing at SCG hospital in Australia, Ben returned to his base in Baltimore and continued working with Johns Hopkins hospital in 1985. After one year of practicing, Ben earned a promotion and he became the director of pediatric neurosurgery. He also worked as a co-director in Craniofacial Centre in the same hospital.

Rise To Prominence

At the peak of his career, the skillful and intelligent surgeon achieved a remarkable feat in the field of medicine. Ben and his team of co-surgeons successfully separated seven-month-old conjoined male twins in Germany and he was the first person to accomplish this then.

Subsequently, the surgeon with magic brain handled a similar case with another conjoined twin in south Africa. It was quite unfortunate that the babies died after the surgery. That was a very sad one for Ben and his team but that didn’t deter him rather it gingered him to do more.

A few years later, Ben and his team went to Zambia in a bid to separate twins (Luka and Joseph) who joined at the top of their heads. The operation lasted for 28 hours and was successful in the end, both the babies were safe and sound.

Biggest Medical Challenge

Dr. Ben Carson recorded numerous successes during his medical career and was hit by some challenging cases as well. The previous cases of conjoined twins he ever handled were kids but this time the patients were adults. Ben with his team went to Iran and performed the operation on the 29-year-old woman, the surgery lasted more than 24 hours and after the session was completed both ladies died a few hours later.

Retirement

The award-winning surgeon after a successful career announced his retirement at the beginning of 2013 and he finally retired on July 1, 2013.

Few years after his retirement, Dr. Ben Carson decided to join US politics, he contested to be the Republican Party candidate but unfortunately, he didn’t make it and finally dropped out of the race. His rival Donald Trump later succeeded and made it through to become the president of the United States of America.

Currently, Dr. Ben Carson has been appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in America.

The genius Ben Carson first met his wife named Lacena Candy Rustin when he was still a student at Yale University in 1971, his wife was a student as well.

The couple, however, decided to tie the knot in 1975. Ben and Candy currently lives in their West Palm Beach mansion in Florida and they were blessed with three sons named Rhoeyce, Benjamin Jr., and Murray.

Ben Carson along with his wife also started a foundation called Carson’s Scholars Fund in 1994. Their aim was to use the foundation to give grants to students to encourage academic excellence.
