Ben McLemore is an American professional basketball player who plays in the National Basketball Association for the Sacramento Kings as a shooting guard. His size, court demeanor, and style of play have drawn comparisons to former NBA All-Star Ray Allen. We will be discussing his career, how he has gone from playing high school and college basketball to the bright lights of the NBA.

He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 11, 1993, to parents, Ben McLemore and Sonya Reid. The McLemore’s had a total number of six children. Ben had two brothers, Keith and Kevin, and three sisters. His full name is Ben Edward McLemore III. He attended Wellston High School in St. Louis, Missouri for three years but then he was forced to changed schools when Wellston got shut down in 2010 just before the start of his senior year.

While at Wellston, he played high school basketball and then went on to attend Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, and later the Christian Life Center in Humble, Texas. By the time he was ready to go to college in 2011, McLemore was already a highly rated upcoming talent.

And even though he had committed to playing for the University of Kansas, the NCAA prevented him from playing giving the reason that he had attended multiple high schools. Citing his transcripts as being “a little fuzzy”. McLemore was later allowed to undergo team activities by the school’s second semester.

When his college career did finally get on the way during the 2012-13 season, he went on to raise his profile which had been underestimated by averaging 15.9 points, 2.0 assists, and 5.2 rebounds accompanied by 49.5% shooting from the field and 87% shooting from the foul line. He was a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award. By the end of his first season in college basketball, McLemore declared for the 2013 NBA Draft.

Selected with the second overall pick by the Sacramento Kings in the 2013 NBA Draft, McLemore signed his rookie scale contract on July 13, 2013, and joined them for the 2013 NBA Summer League. In the final game of the regular season, McLemore scored a season-high 31 points in a season in which he averaged 8.8 points, 1.0 assists, and 2.9 rebounds in 26.7 minutes. Also at the end of his rookie season, McLemore had played in all 82 games making 55 starts along the way.

McLemore helped the Kings to win the 2014 NBA Summer League averaging 12.6 points. His season-high for the 2014-15 season was 27 points in a game against Charlotte Hornets in which the Kings won. He averaged 12.1 points, 1.7 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game at the end of his second season, starting in all of the games. The third-year contract extension in his contract was activated by the Kings.

His contract would once again be extended with the clause provided in his contract allowing for an extension. McLemore had his best game against the Houston Hornets where he scored 19 points and 9 rebounds in a loss. His highest scoring game was against the Pelicans with 26 points. When he missed his first game in his professional career in February of 2016 due to a sprained wrist, it ended a consecutive games streak of 211 which is only bettered in the NBA by Tristan Thompson’s 335 games streak.

McLemore moved and was playing for the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2017-18 season. When he was injured, he was sent to the NBA G League but he did come back and set a new season-high 21 points in a win over his former team, the Sacramento Kings. On July 17, 2018, McLemore and Deyonta Davis were traded to the Kings by the Grizzlies for Garrett Temple.

McLemore is one of those stars who has managed to keep his love life really private. He does, however, have a daughter, Teagan born in March 2017. The identity of Teagan’s mother is unavailable to the public.

McLemore stands at a height of 6 feet and 5 inches and weighs in at 88 kg.

Aside from being compared to Ray Allen, McLemore broke the freshman scoring record set by Danny Manning. He helped the Kansas Jayhawks win a Big-12 championship in his single season with them.

Ben McLemore was nicknamed Young Sav by his mates. Sav meaning Savage.

The street he grew up on, Wellston Avenue was renamed Ben McLemore III Place in his honor.
