Aside from playing the left-back position for the Premier League club Manchester City, French professional football player Benjamin Mendy also plays the same position for France national team.

Before moving to the premier league side in 2017 on a world-record transfer fee, Mendy spent four seasons in the French professional league, Ligue 1, where he won a domestic championship with Monaco.

On the International level, Benjamin has represented France in several international competitions and tournaments. He has played for the country in both the under-16 and under-17 teams. Mendy was part of the squad that led France to the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup where the team reached the quarter-finals. He is also part of the senior team playing for the nation at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

League Career

Benjamin Mendy’s first appearance as a professional footballer was in August 2011 in a match against Amiens which ended in a 2-1 loss. He appeared with Ligue 2 club Le Havre, after signing a three-year contract with the club the month before.

In July 2013, he signed a contract with Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille and made his debut with the team in August in a match against Guingamp. In a match against Saint-Étienne the following month, Mendy scored his first goal for the team.

His European debut came the following month at Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately, Marseille lost all their group stage matches and subsequently, fell out of the competition and the then manager was sacked and replaced with José Anigo who didn’t use Mendy until towards the end of the season when he was featured a few times.

At the start of the next season, Benjamin Mendy was featured in the match against Lille, his performance was criticized by Marseille’s former left-back Éric Di Meco who said he would “eat a rat” should Mendy ever make it to the French national team. Interestingly, after that season, Mendy was on the list of 40-men  being considered for the 2014 Golden Boy award.

In the next season, he improved his game under coach Marcelo Bielsa. He made 33 starts in the league in the 2014–15 campaign, with 6 assists as Marseille qualified for the Europa League. In September 2015, he was shown a red card after committing a professional foul on Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro, this resulted in a two-match ban. He would later miss 13 games after sustaining a hamstring injury in the match against Caen on 3 January 2016.

After making 101 competitive appearances and having 14 assists to his name, he left Olympique de Marseille for their rival Monaco on 22 June 2016 on a five-year contract. Benjamin Mendy was part of the team’s 2016–17 Ligue 1 championship season. He, alongside five of his team members, won the 2017 UNFP Team of the Year.

After that season, Mendy moved over to English league club Manchester City with whom he signed a five-year contract worth £52m. This transfer fee beat the previous fee record paid on another City Player Kyle Walker. While playing in a game against Crystal Palace in September, Mendy sustained a knee injury that kept him away from the games until April 2018 when he came in as a substitute for Fabian Delph in the 75th minute in a game against Swansea City.

His appearance in this match gave him the minimum of 5 league games which is required to receive a Winner’s Medal.

International Career

Mendy has also played for his birth country France. He began as a French youth international representing France at both the under-16 and under-17 levels. In fact, he was part of the under-17 squad that represented the country at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup where the team pulled through to the quarter-finals stage.

He was called to join the senior team squad for the first time in 2017. He made his debut with the team in March the same year in a match against Luxembourg in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match that ended in a 3–1 away win. Benjamin Mendy is also part of the national team squad representing France at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
