This American drama, like many others, was based on a book. It draws its plot from a 1982 novella titled Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The movie is based on the story of a man named Andy Dufresne played by Tim Robbins who was accused of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Shawshank State Penitentiary.
