Billy Horschel’s Biography
William John Horschel was born on 7 December 1986 and grew up in Grant, Florida, where he attended Bayside High School in neighboring Palm Bay. On an athletic scholarship, he attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, and during his school years, he played for the Florida Gators men’s golf team in the NCAA competition from 2006 to 2009. He later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in sports management.
During his time at the NCAA, Billy Horschel played in the 2006 US Open and won the individual medalist honors in the amateur competition of the year. His round of 60 was an 18-hole tournament and USGA record, but he didn’t make it past the third round of match play and also missed the cut.
Horschel’s professional career began in 2009, and in December of the same year, he successfully earned a 2010 PGA Tour Card through the qualifying school to secure his medical extension if he didn’t earn enough points for the Tour Card.
In 2011, Horschel made his first cut on eleven PGA Tour starts, at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, and finished the tournament with T13. He finished the season in 140th place on the money list, giving him conditional status for 2012. His best finish on the Web.com Tour this year is the 4th place finish at the Stadion Classic at the UGA.
Over the years as a professional golfer, Horschel has moved back and forth in the official golf world rankings. In 2014 he claimed his second victory at the BMW Championship, which catapulted him to 23rd place in the world rankings. As if to push his position further up the ladder, he won the Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club along with the FedEx Cup and moved up to 14th place in the OWGR.
Career Earnings and Net Worth
In 2015, Forbes named Billy Horschel as the highest-paid golfer with net assets of $19 million and an income/profit of $16 million.
In September 2014 Horschel earned a total of $13.5 million in three weeks. Initially, he won $597,333 for second place at the Deutsche Bank Championship, $1,440,000 for winning the BNW Championship on Sunday, September 8, and $11,440,000 for winning the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. It was described as Horschel’s greatest success, and although he could do what he liked with all the money, the champion’s generosity knew no bounds. He gave his caddie Micah Fugitt $1 million and immediately made his teammate a millionaire.
In addition, Horschel is said to have tipped the locker room attendants at the East Lake Golf Club $10,000 each.
During his interview with Golf Digest, Horschel did not shy away from the satisfaction of winning such a large sum. On his website, he revealed that he came from a “working-class family” where money was not abundant and that he was not a country club kid. He said he had always wanted to make it big so that he could pay his family back for everything they had done for him.
Billy Horschel’s Wife
Horschel and his wife Brittany got married in 2010 and the couple has two daughters. Their first child Skyler Horschel was born in 2014, shortly after the golfer’s victory in the Tour Championship, which came with a $10 million bonus. Their second daughter Colbie arrived in April 2017.
The Horschels met in Florida and met after their first encounter at a junior golf tournament in 2004 when Skyler Horschel was also a golfer in Brittany, but her wrist injury ended her competitive career, which was more traumatic for Brittany than either had expected. Like most couples, her marriage was not without challenges and struggles. During a performance in “Good Morning America”, they told about Brittany’s struggle with alcoholism.
Before that, she went to her Twitter page to describe the challenges of her young family. She began by saying that she was an alcoholic who, with the support of family and friends, had fought to regain her life and her family. Before her only sobriety from alcohol, Brittany described how she started the morning with a cocktail, mixing orange juice and vodka regularly, and then continued drinking throughout the day.
With sheer determination, the Horschels reclaimed their lives, and Brittany hopes that her story will inspire other alcoholics out there to seek help, as she courageously did.
