Candice Dupree’s Bio
Born Candice Joanna Dupree on August 16, 1984, Candice was raised in Tampa, Florida. Her fathers’ name was Toussaint Dupree and her mother’s name was Patricia Mungenast. Both of her parents are retired Airforce personnel. Most interestingly, Candice is a twin. She has two siblings, Crystal Dupree, who is her twin and Shayna Dupree, her much younger sister. She has and still maintains a very cordial relationship with her mother who she says is her biggest fan. She developed an interest in playing basketball at age 10 and her mother pushed her to continue with it and so she played in high school.
Candice attended Paul R. Wharton High School where she played basketball and volleyball. Her impressive skills and records in basketball resulted in her been named both Tampa Tribune Player of the Year and Federal Division Player of the Year in 2002. She was also named All-State second team and All-Suncoast first team in the same year. As good as she was in basketball, the same could be said of volleyball as she led the school’s volleyball team to a district title.
After high school, Candice Dupree charged into college brimming with enthusiasm as she enrolled at Temple University in Pennsylvania. She graduated in 2006 after a four-period in which she gave her best to the game of basketball, winning laurels, titles, awards, and accolades with the college women basketball team – The Owls. Among the personal honors she won include the Naismith Award, John R. Wooden Award, WBCA/State Farm Wade Trophy, among others in 2006. Candice also won the A-10 Tournament MVP for three consecutive years – 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Candice Dupree never thought she would go pro or take up a career in basketball until she was in college. Her exploits in high school were just out of her love for the courts but by the time she was in junior college year, she made up her mind that she was going to pursue a professional career in the game.
She was selected by the Chicago Sky in the 2006 WNBA Draft in 6th overall, and she was named to the Eastern Conference WNBA All-Star team in her debut year, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2015, and 2017. In her rookie year, she played against Dawn Staley in the WNBA All-Star game. Dawn Staley was the basketball coach of her college team. She joined Phoenix Mercury in a deal involving three teams in March 2010 and she won the WNBA championship with them 2014 – coincidentally, playing against her former team, Chicago Sky, in the Finals who they thrashed 3-0.
In 2017, Candice Dupree moved to the Indiana Fever franchise in another three-team swap where she was named in the 2017 WNBA All-Star Game, which was the sixth time she was so nominated. On the international level, Dupree represented the USA at the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey where they won a gold medal. She was named on the US National team side that played against a WNBA All-Stars team in preparation for the 2010 FIBA (Women’s) World Championship which was to hold in the Czech Republic. She was also part of the team that made it to the FIBA games. The team, which was coached by Geno Auriemma, defied the odds (of not having enough practice time), to beat both then-unbeaten Australia and the hosts, the Czech Republic to clinch the gold medal in the event.
