While growing up, Hicks and her family left New York for Scottsdale, Arizona. It was here that she received her high school education at Gerard Catholic High School in Phoenix, Arizona where she was a cheerleader and a member of the National Honor Society. After graduating in 1969, she enrolled at Saint Mary’s College (Indiana) to study English, Literature, and Theology. She later won a prestigious acting fellowship to Cornell University where she was a member of the Ithaca Repertory Theater Company before graduating with a master of fine arts degree.

Following the completion of her studies, Hicks moved back to New York to launch her acting career. She first found work in television commercials before soon after landing a major role on the ABC soap opera Ryan’s Hopes as Dr. Faith Coleridge. Hicks spent about a year and a half on the soap opera before leaving it to appear in the 1978 Bernard Slade Broadway play Tribute.

After Tribute, Catherine Hicks got cast as high school principal and psychologist, Dr. Emily Rappant in the CBS sitcom The Bad News Bears (1979-80). During this time, she also appeared in TV movies like Love For Rent (1979) and To Race the Wind (1980) before beating out a bunch of her colleagues to get the role of Marilyn Monroe in Marilyn: The Untold Story (1980).
