Chip Caray – Bio, Net Worth, Kids, Wife, Parents, Family

Somethings for some people may just be in the blood. In the same way, broadcasting can probably be said to be for Chip Caray. Following in the footsteps of his legendary grandfather and famous father, Chip is now a third generation broadcaster who covers baseball and basketball for Fox Sports South and Fox Sports Southeast. He is famous for his career with TBS before moving to Fox and Caray is also hosting occasional shows on the Atlanta Braves Radio Network.

Chip Caray Bio

Even though it is as Chip Caray that the broadcaster has come to be known, he was born Harry Christopher Caray III to Lila Haberberger and Skip Caray on 27 February 1965 in the United States.

With sports somehow always in the family, Caray wanted to play baseball when he was growing up in St. Louis. Like most other kids growing up there, all he had ever wanted desperately, was to play for the St Louis Cardinal.

For his education, he went to Parkway West High School and after graduating from the comprehensive high school in Ballwin, he proceeded to the University of Georgia and he graduated in 1987 securing a degree in journalism.

After his graduation, he took a job with some stations in Panama City in Florida and also in Greensboro in North Carolina. It was from here that he continued to later work for Seattle Mariners between 1993 and 1995. In 1998, he took a job with the Chicago Cubs where he would work with his grandfather. Unfortunately, not long after, the older man died.

In 2004 after he left the Cubs, he signed a deal with TBS. Chip worked there until it was announced in 2009 that he was leaving TBS. Next, he went to Fox Sports South.

Most of the time, his career is linked to the successes of his father and grandfather who both had very successful careers. But then, Chip has not had any dealing with either man. In fact, he only met his grandfather a number of times when he was younger. That said, he followed what they did on TV and was drawn to sports broadcasting in 1983 during a Braves game in which his father made a call of the home run of Bob Watson off Steve Howe.

His Family: Parents, Wife, and Kids

The parents of the broadcaster are Harry Christopher “Skip” Caray Jr. who is popular as Skip Caray and Lila Haberberger. Chip did not have much to do with his father because when he was only four, his parents divorced and he moved on with his mother.

After the divorce, his father got married again in 1976 to Paula Caray with whom he remained until his death in 2008. The couple has three children, Cindy, Shayelyn, and Josh Caray who is also a broadcaster.

The man who became a father figure in his life was his maternal grandfather who was a dentist in St. Louis. Because of his influence in the life of the young Chip, he also considered becoming a pediatrician.

As regards his love life, Chip is a married man. In 1996, he tied the knot with Susan Caray. While it is not known how they met or even when; it is known that they have remained ever close since they got married.

Needless to say, Caray grew up to realize his parents had divorced for a long time with his father hardly playing any role in his life. More so, his grandparents had also divorced, so it may be easy for one to assume that divorce would be lurking in the corners for him. Fortunately, more than two decades since they became man and wife, their bond seems to be even stronger.

Chip and his wife have been blessed with four kids – Christopher Caray, Summerlyn Caray, Tristan Carey, and Stefan Carey. Although the kids are into some form of athletics, there is no indication that they may want to follow in the footsteps of their father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. That is except for Christopher who according to Chip, has shown some interest.

Net Worth

Having enjoyed a career that has spanned many years, it’s normal for one to expect that Chip is well taken care of in the financial sense. He has a net worth that is estimated at over $1 million. He made his fortune from his successful career as a media personality and his annual salary is pegged at $100,000.
