Coco Vandeweghe is an American-born professional tennis player. As a junior player, she won the 2008 US Open – Girls’ Singles title at the age of 16. She has also netted 2 WTA titles at the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships (2014 and 2016). Vandeweghe made it to the semis of 2 Grand Slam tournaments in 2017 and also reached the final of the 2017 WTA Elite Trophy which catapulted her into the top 10 of the WTA Rankings.

Colleen “CoCo” Vandeweghe was born on December 6, 1991, in New York to Tauna Vandeweghe and Robert Mullarkey. She was raised alongside an older brother Beau with whom she commenced playing tennis when she was an eleven-year-old. As a junior player, Vandeweghe did not participate in many tournaments, however, she was able to win the 2008 US Open girls’ singles tournament having entered the tournament with a wildcard.

At the age of 14, Coco Vandeweghe made an early entry into the WTA Tour, however, she was not able to reach the later stages of several tournaments. Vandeweghe eventually broke the jinx as she reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 Memphis Indoor Tennis Championships and also broke into the top 100 of the WTA Rankings.

3 years later, she cliched the first WTA singles title of her career at the 2014 Topshelf Open. This pushed her further to No. 51. spot on the WTA Rankings. She also attained her best season-end ranking of No. 39 in 2014. Two years later, she won her second WTA title at the 2016 Ricoh Open.

The 2017 Australian Open tournament proved to be a very historic one for Coco Vandeweghe. She achieved her first victory over a No. 1 player when she ousted defending champion and world No. 1 Angelique Kerber in the 4th round of the tournament. She made it all the way to the semifinals of the tournament where she eventually lost to Venus Williams. Her impressive run at the 2017 Australian Open equally helped her break into the top 20 of the WTA Rankings. She also reached the semis of the 2017 US Open which helped her rise to a career-high ranking of No. 16. She later made it into the top 10 after reaching the final of the 2017 WTA Elite Trophy.

Coco Vandeweghe’s biological father Robert Mullarkey is a New York businessman who served as a securities analyst with First Boston Corporation New York. However, her parents got divorced when the tennis star was pretty young and as a result, her relationship with her father is rather strained. She has a better relationship with her stepfather John McEnroe, a former fitness trainer.

Coco Vandeweghe equally comes from a family of professional athletes. Her mother Tauna Vandeweghe is a former competition swimmer who represented the USA during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec. She was also on the United States Olympic volleyball team that clinched the silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Coco’s elder brother, Beau also played volleyball for the athletics team of Pepperdine University, the Pepperdine Waves.

Coco Vandeweghe’s maternal uncle Kiki Vandeweghe is also a retired NBA player. He has served as the general manager of the Denver Nuggets and the New Jersey Nets after which he became the Executive Vice President of the NBA. Coco’s maternal grandfather Ernie Vandeweghe was a professional basketball player who played as a guard for the NBA side New York Knicks. Her maternal grandmother Colleen Kay Hutchins was a former actress and also won the Miss America beauty pageant in 1952. Long retired NBA player Mel Hutchins is also a brother to Coco Vandewege’s grandmother.

Coco Vandeweghe was born in New York, however, she is a self-acclaimed “total California girl” as she spends much of her off-season period at the beach with members of her family.
