Colt McCoy is a former highly decorated college football quarterback that played for the University of Texas at Austin before entering the National Football League (NFL). He currently plays for the Washington Redskins having previously lined up for the San Francisco 49ers (2013) and the Cleveland Browns (2010–2012) who drafted him in 2010 with the 85th overall pick.
The two-time Walter Camp Award recipient, who was a runner-up and then a finalist for the 2008 and 2009 Heisman Trophy, has the record for most career touchdown passes, passing yards and wins for his school and has since then had his No 12 jersey retired.
Early Education and Life
Colt McCoy was born Daniel McCoy, the eldest of three children to Debra Kay and Steven Brad McCoy, on the 5th of September 5, 1986, in Hobbs, New Mexico. He attended Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas where he played football under his father who was the school’s coach. The talented young man was a standout among his peers as he earned several accolades, including a First-team All-state selection. His high school career saw him complete 536 of 849 passes (63.1%) for 9,344 yards with 116 touchdowns.
After high school, McCoy enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin where he became a legend. His journey to legendary status did however not begin immediately because he had a redshirt year as a freshman. He came into the team in the following year and quickly cemented himself as the starting quarterback, becoming the first Texas freshman quarterback to start and win a season-opening game in over 50 years. He completed a total of 217 of 318 passes for 2,570 yards with 29 touchdowns.
McCoy quickly became a media sensation in the following 2007 season, appearing on Magazine covers as well as on the watch lists of the Maxwell, Manning and Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Awards. At the end of the season, he won the offensive-player MVP award after completing 276 of 424 passes for 3,303 yards. In the 2008 season, he earned his first of two First-team All-American selections after completing 332 of 433 passes for 3,859 yards with 34 touchdowns.
In his final collegiate season, Colt McCoy led his team to a perfect 12–0 regular season record and became the most victorious quarterback in NCAA history with a total of 45 wins. He went on to be named to his second First-team All-American team as he completed 332 of 470 passes for 3,521 yards with 27 touchdowns.
Colt McCoy’s Salary
As a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, Colt McCoy signed a four-year contract worth $5 million and further received a signing bonus of $751,000. In 2013, after being traded to San Francisco, his salary was restructured from $1.5 million to $630,000. The following year, he put pen to paper on a 1 year $795,000 contract with the Washington Redskins which increased to $1.5 million in 2015.
In 2016, the quarterback signed a new three-year $9 million contract which gave him an average salary of $3 million per year. That contract was extended by one year in 2018, making sure he remains with the team until 2020.

Colt McCoy is married to former middle-distance track and field athlete for Baylor University, Rachel Glandorf McCoy. The couple met each other in Austin, Texas in the summer of 2008 while Rachel was working as an intern for Keye TV. She had interviewed the Longhorns star quarterback a number of times before McCoy decided to ask her out on a date.
They went on to get engaged on January 12, 2010, just after his team lost the 2010 BCS National Championship game. McCoy brought his lady out onto the field to the center of the stadium and showed her the jumbotron which displayed the question; “Rachel, I love you! Will you marry me? Colt.” Rachel was said to have been absolutely ecstatic and said yes. The two went ahead to exchange vows at an extravagant ceremony a few months later on the 17th of July, 2010 which featured performances from singers Aaron Watson and Jordan Shipley. Together, the couple has two children; daughters named Sloane and Brooke Lincoln.
Brother
Colt McCoy has two brothers; Case McCoy and Chance McCoy, who both played college football. Chance played as a wide receiver for Abilene Christian University while Case, who was born on the 12th of February, 1990, played as a quarterback for the University of Texas Longhorns football team like his older famous brother. Upon graduating college, Case took a job as a tenant broker specialist with HPI Corporate Services in Austin where he currently resides.
