Daniel Norris was drafted in the second round (74th overall) of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Following a successful stint in the minor league, he was called upon September 1, 2014, as part of the month’s roster expansion. His first MLB game which was against the Boston Red Sox was played on September 5. He now plays as a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.

The pitching phenom started the following year well earning a number of titles in the first month of 2015 and beyond. He was named the third-best LHP prospect in baseball by MLB on January 21 as well as the number 1 Blue Jays’ prospect, the number 3 left-handed pitching prospect in baseball, and the 17th best prospect overall in 2015.

After remarkable plays with the Blue Jays, Norris was traded to the Detroit Tigers in July 2015 alongside Matt Boyd and Jairo Labourt in exchange for David Price. After making his debut with the Tigers on August 2, he became the first pitcher on the team to hit a home run in his first career plate appearance. He is currently on a 60-day disabled list following his surgery in May.

The baseball pitcher was born Daniel David Norris on April 25, 1993, in Johnson City, Tennessee where he grew up with his two older sisters, Amanda Haywood and Melanie Norris. His parents are David Norris and Sandra Norris. The family has owned a bicycle shop in their hometown for over eight decades. Although his family had no history of sports, he played three sports in high school including baseball, learning all of the pitches by his senior year of high school. He graduated from Science Hill High School.

Baseball America rated him as the 91st best prospect in baseball before the 2012 season and would name him to their First Team All-Stars for 2014. Norris was ranked the No. 3 high school player in the country and although he earned a scholarship offer to play for Clemson University, he opted to go pro, making his way into the big league in the 2011 draft.

Though he has been kept off his feet a few times in the course of his career as a result of injuries and surgeries as is common with most athletes, the most recent being on his left groin and pelvic region in May 2018, a brief scare with thyroid cancer which he was diagnosed with in October 2015 but currently free from, Norris has sprung up farther than he was before the downs, still with myriads of potentials in his left arm and his future. He bats and throws left-handed.

He is the creative and outdoor-loving bloke who enjoys nothing more than the time spent taking in the wonders of nature from the comforts of his Volkswagen van, a microbus he named Shaggy, during the off-seasons in MLB. Daniel maintains that those trips and adventures help to keep him humble and also help him to keep things in perspective.

He is dubbed the van man but has maintained that despite his love for adventure and other interests, baseball remains what he loves, above anything else.
