Shortly after their arrival in Toronto, David was enrolled at a high school in the city, where he first explored the possibility of acting. He went on to feature in a number of films directed by his school, excelling beyond his own expectations.

The British-born Canadian star later dropped out of school in his senior year after discovering that he was meant to be an actor and a computer expert.

David’s love for computers dates back to his teen years in Toronto, where he would glue himself to the machine for hours. At the time, he pursued an obsessive interest in the machine so much that he declared himself a computer nerd.

After dropping out of school to pursue acting and computing, Hewlett launched a web development firm, called ‘Darkly Media’. He also established an internet community called ‘Fusefilm.com’ for filmmakers.

His first marriage was to Canadian actress Soo Garay in 2000. The sweethearts legally divorced just after four years of staying together as husband and wife. Not long after, David found love again but this time, in the arms of Jane Loughman, who he later got married to in 2008.

While David’s marriage to Soo (also called sue) did not produce any child, he shares a son (Sebastian Flynn Loughman Hewlett) with Jane Loughman.
