David Mitchell Biography

Mitchell was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, on the 14th day of the month of July 1974. He was born to former hotel managers Ian Douglas Mitchell and Kathryn Grey Hughes Mitchell and he has two siblings who are both boys, one of them is Daniel.

David attended Abingdon School in Oxfordshire where he began to identify himself with some comic characters. There also, he began writing comedy materials and made comedy sketches with his friends alike. After his younger brother, Daniel was born, his family moved to Oxford where his parents got jobs at Oxford Polytechnic, now Oxford Brookes University while he attended an independent preparatory school in the city called the New College School. But prior to his enrolment into college, David worked as a proofreader for the Oxford University Press.

Career History

David Mitchell moved to Peterhouse College, Cambridge in 1993, to study History. There, he met Robert Webb and together, they recorded their first show Innocent Millions Dead or Dying: A Wry Look at the Post-Apocalyptic Age in January 1995.

David was also the President of the Cambridge Footlight dramatic club from 1995 to 1996 academic year. His career as a comedian officially began after he performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with his friend Webb. They were then hired to make comedy sketches for two famous comedians Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong and for the British comedy sketch show, Big Train which aired from 1998-2002.

David’s first break into TV acting was in 2000 when he co-wrote and starred on the short-lived BBC sketch show Bruiser, with Webb. The following year, the two began a sketch show of their own titled The Mitchell and Webb Situation. The show which was well received by the public ran for six episodes on the defunct channel Play UK. Their next show was the Peepshow released in 2003, in which they co-starred as flatmates. The show actually gave their rise to stardom a major boost. It won the 2004 Golden Rose Award, 2008 Best Situation Comedy BAFTA, and two British Comedy Awards for Best TV Comedy (2006 and 2007). It is also Channel 4’s longest sitcom.

The pair has also appeared in their first film Magicians which was released in 2007. They also co-wrote their first book, This Mitchell and Webb Book, published in 2009. Individually, David Mitchell appeared in the Radio sitcom Think the Unthinkable; BBC2 sitcom Doctors and Nurses, The Taming of The Shrew, Blunder and Jam and Jerusalem. He has also narrated the British version of Beauty and the Geek and made a piece of himself titled Listen to Mitchell. His appearances from 2013 include Best of the Worst, Would I Lie To You? and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, among others. In 2014, he was among the signatories of Guardia. Today, his net worth is estimated to be at $58 million.

David Mitchell who considers himself British rather than English is married to Victoria Coren, an English writer and broadcaster best known for hosting the BBC television quiz show Only Connect since 2008. The two met at Jonathan Ross’ annual Halloween party in 2007 but they began dating in 2010. They announced their engagement on the British Dailies, The Times, in March 2012.

After getting married in November 2012, David automatically became the brother-in-law of Giles Coren and Alexander Armstrong who are both renowned writers and actors. They now have a daughter, Barbara Elizabeth June Mitchell, who was born on May 22, 2015.
