David Robinson Son, Wife, Height, Net Worth of Former NBA Star

There are less than a handful of center position players in NBA history who can stand toe to toe, in regards to talent and accomplishments, with two-time NBA Champion, David Robinson. The ten-time NBA All-Star, who garnered four All-NBA First Team and four NBA All-Defensive team selections, was the 1st overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, the team he spent his whole career with.

David Robinson Biography

On the 6th of August, 1965, in the island city of Key West, Florida, Ambrose and Freda Robinson welcomed their second child, David Maurice Robinson. As a child, the Robinson family moved around the United States and lived in different cities due to Ambrose’s work with the Navy. By the time he retired, the family settled in Woodridge, Virginia where their son attended Osbourn Park High School in Manassas, Virginia.

David Robinson was notably an exceptional student who excelled in both his studies and in sports although he was said to have struggled in basketball despite measuring upwards of 6 feet at the time. By his senior high school year, however, his school’s basketball team coach added him to the team and he earned all-area and all-district honors despite having never actively played the sport. His one highlight season did not prove enough to garner interest from colleges so Robinson relied on his high SAT score to gain admission to study mathematics at the United States Naval Academy.

In his junior year as a part of the Navy Midshipmen men’s basketball team, Robinson, who now measured 7 feet, earned consensus second-team All-American honors. In his senior year, he earned consensus first-team All-American honors and the Naismith and John R. Wooden Awards before graduating. Upon graduation, the San Antonio Spurs selected him with the first overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft. However, due to active duty obligations with the Navy, Robinson had to wait for two years before he was able to play basketball professionally.

After fulfilling his service commitment, David Robinson joined up with the Spurs for the 1989-90 season where he was unanimously named the NBA Rookie of the Year. In 1992, he was a part of the Dream Team that won gold at the Olympic Games in Barcelona. Robinson went on to dominate the NBA in various categories but for some reason, he was unable to mount a good bid for an NBA Championship, even in 1995 when he was named MVP. It was until his team got the opportunity to draft Tim Duncan that Robinson was able to win the elusive NBA title, twice.

Net Worth

David Robinson went from bullying opposition players in the NBA to dominating the venture capital market as he is today estimated to have a net worth of $200 million. The 2001 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner is said to have earned over $116 million in salary during his playing career.

Upon retiring, he put his money to good use by teaming up with former Goldman Sachs banker Daniel Bassichis to create Admiral Capital Group, a private equity firm that aimed to invest in opportunities that provide both financial and social returns. The group has since grown to have a portfolio worth more than $100 million and assets in the shape of upscale hotels, office buildings, hospitality companies, and retail stores worth more than $350 million.

Having enjoyed so much success, David Robinson has made sure to give back to the community. In 2001, he and his wife founded the Carver Academy in San Antonio, Texas, a Christian private non-profit school for inner-city children. He has reportedly donated more than $11 million to the school. Robinson and Bassichis also donate 10 percent of their profits to charitable causes.

David Robinson’s Wife & Son

David Robinson has been married to his wife Valerie Hoggatt Robinson for almost three decades. The pair, who reportedly met when Valerie was a college student and David was a Reserve with the Navy, tied the knot on the 16th of December, 1991, at a Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas.

Together, the couple has three sons; David Jr., Corey, and Justin. Just like Robinson, all his sons are athletes although none of them have been able to make it as professionals. David Jr. and Corey played football for the University of Notre Dame while their younger brother Justin plays basketball for Duke University.

It is not clear what happened to David Jr.’s career but Corey, who was a First-team Academic All-American in his sophomore year, was advised on medical grounds to quit the game. As for Justin, who was a two-time all-state selection in Texas, it is yet to be seen if he would make it to the NBA as he was only a freshman in college in 2015.
