Popularly called “Tank”, Demarcus Lawrence is a professional American football player who plays the defensive end position for the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. For someone who has been a Cowboy fan all his life, it is only a dream come through to be selected to play for his dream team in the 2014 NFL Draft. Before he was selected by the Cowboys in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL Draft, he played college football at Boise State University.

At Boise, he accumulated an impressive stat line and in two seasons, he played in 23 games, finishing with 120 total tackles, (34 tackles for a loss), 20 sacks, and 7 forced fumbles. Now, here are all the facts you need to know about the dynamic player, including how he got nicknamed “Tank”.

Demarcus Lawrence – Bio

DeMarcus Lawrence was born in Aiken South Carolina on the 28th day of April 1992 to Yvonne and Tyrone Lawrence. Lawrence told Dallas Cowboys in 2015 that the nickname “Tank” originated when he was young and out playing on the baseball court when a fight ensued between him and his friend.

After that incident, his friend would say ‘I tanked him on his head, I tanked him.’ And so, people have been calling him Tank ever since. Demarcus also recalls how he had a bad game back in high school and how his coach banned people from calling him Tank, “He can’t play football”. But instead of getting discouraged, Lawrence said he was inspired to live up to his nickname. So I’m the Tank, he added.

He attended Butler Community College between 2010 to 2011 and as a freshman, Demarcus Lawrence earned his first-team JC Gridwire as well as his second-team NJCAA All-America honors. The team, on the other hand, won the Jayhawk Conference, as well as the Region IV Championships, and finished the year as the nation’s No. 2 in the final national poll.

He transferred to Boise State University before the start of the 2012 season and began his college career with the Broncos that season and led the team with 9.5 sacks. The next season, he again led them with 10.5 sacks. At Boise, he was named first-team All-Mountain West, and Walter Camp All-America Second Team.

His NFL Career

After the 2013 season at the Boise State, he entered the NFL Draft and was selected by Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2014 NFL. Demarcus Lawrence would, unfortunately, begin his rookie season on the injured reserve list after fracturing his right foot in the training camp. His first appearance was in the ninth week in the game against Arizona Cardinals.

The lost time definitely affected his play that season and he made a very little impact. With a record of 11 tackles and no sacks, Lawrence lost the starter right defensive end job to Jeremy Mincey. The following season wasn’t a very smooth one either, he ended the season with a streak of 7 games with at least one sack, thirty-one quarterback pressures (second on the team), and fifty-six tackles.

He also began his 2016 season on not so good note. In January, he underwent back surgery which turned out to be more serious than expected and he would later receive a four-game ban from the NFL for failing a drug test. Thus, that season was pretty unproductive as the defensive player ended the year playing in just twelve games and registering only one sack. His best games that season were the ones against the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Washington Redskins, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Demarcus Lawrence had a better season in 2017. He received the NFC Defensive Player of the Week title in the third week and with 6.5 sacks recorded in the month of November, he was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month.

After a breakout season record of 14.5 sacks, he was named to his first Pro Bowl in December 2017. In 2018, he was placed on a franchise tag after failing to reach an agreement on a long-term contract with him.

His Height, Weight, And Body Measurements

Lawrence stands at the height of 6 ft 3 in, that is 1.91 m, and a very athletic body that weighs 120kg (265 lb). His arm length is 33 3/4″.
