The former Bronco wide receiver was born the oldest of five children to Ed Sr. and Elizabeth McCaffrey on August 17, 1968, in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. His siblings are accomplished athletes in their own right as well and include two brothers – Billy McCaffrey (a retired pro basketball player) and Michael, a former Duke and Vanderbilt college basketball player – and two sisters; Monica of Georgetown University Women’s Basketball and Meghan.
McCaffrey not only wowed his high school audience as a football player, he was also a basketball standout. He attended Allentown Central Catholic High School where he competed in the East Penn Conference in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. In basketball, he averaged 21.4 points his senior season and finished his career with a then-school record 1,637 points. His team, Vikings also won a state title in 1984 and in 1986.

Career
He was drafted in the third round by the New York Giants in 1991 bringing his dream of becoming pro football player to reality. Following a three-year spell with the Giants, he signed one year contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 1994. Though his playtime was limited which was only a season, his contributions counted. His reliable and key roles saw 49ers winning its fifth Super Bowl title.
The following season, he found a home in Denver Broncos where he became a top and reliable target for quarterback John Elway who directed the offense of the game. During his time with the team, Ed McCaffrey proved to be an asset. He became a 1,000-yard receiver with a compilation of 1053 yards on 64 catches in 1998 reprising his efforts in 1999 and 2000 with 1,083 yards on 71 catches, and 1,317 receiving yards on 101 catches (setting a record for most receptions) respectively.
Furthermore, in 1998 and 1999, the Broncos won its first two Super Bowl championships, a third for Ed. He also made his Pro Bowl appearance in 1998. He was the second of the wide receiver duo with teammate Rod Smith to each gain 100 receptions in the same season in 2000; the only second duo from the same team.
Following a series of injuries which hampered him, he called it quits and retired at the end of the 2003 season on February 29, 2004. He finished his career with 565 receptions for 7,422 yards, 55 touchdowns, and played 185 games wearing #87.

The third son, Dylan a 2017 graduate of Valor Christian High School (VCHS) was a four-star quarterback there. In three of the four years he played for his school, his team won the Colorado Class 5A state championship (5A being the highest of the 5 classes). He now plays college football at the University of Michigan. His younger brother, Luke is a 2017-2018 sophomore at VCHS but has already received offers from the University of Michigan and the University of Nebraska.
