Eddie Bravo developed an interest in martial arts and karate through several visits to the gym. In 1994, he was inspired to take up a professional career in martial arts after watching legendary martial artist Royce Gracie win multiple Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) titles. Bravo was trained in the Brazilian jiu-jitsu by Jean Jacques Machado, a member of the famed Machado family of martial artists. He also trained in the Jeet Kune Do martial arts system from 1996 to 1998.

When his training was completed, Bravo decided to quit every other form of martial arts to concentrate fully on jiu-jitsu. He earned a blue belt as well as a purple belt in relatively quick succession. He equally developed his own signature techniques including the spinal lock submission hold and the rubber guard.

After obtaining a brown belt in jiu-jitsu, Eddie Bravo entered the 145 lb/66 kg division of the 2003 Abu-Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship which marked a major career highlight for the jiu-jitsu enthusiast. Though he didn’t win the tournament, Bravo was shot to international prominence after defeating Gustavo Dantas in the elimination round and also defeating four-time world champion and three-time ADCC champion Royler Gracie in the quarter-finals.

Following his meteoric rise to stardom, Eddie Bravo was awarded a black belt by his teacher Jean Jacques Machado when he returned to the United States.
