Erik Salitan got famous as an American who at a time lived his life in the remote and harsh arctic region, 67 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Wiseman, Alaska. He lived there with his wife – Martha Mae Salitan and son – Lucas Salitan, making ends meet by fishing and hunting games in the wilderness where they call home.
The couple starred on Life Below Zero, a BBC Worldwide show that airs on the National Geographic Channel. Aside from them, others that have appeared on the Emmy Award-winning television series are Chip Hailstone and Agnes Hailstone with their 7 children, Glenn Villeneuve, Andy Bassich with his 25 dogs, Jessie Holmes, and his 40 dogs, and Sue Aikens.
In this article, you will be learning more about Erik and all that happened in his life before he became a reality television star. Of course, his wife Martha will hardly ever be out of the picture and we will conclude by telling you all that we know about why he left Life Below Zero.
Erik Salitan Bio
Erik Salitan is an Aquarian as he was born on the 9th day of February in New York City, USA. He grew up in the rural lower 48 states at the upstate of New York where he had a simple life. He completed his 12th grade at Finger Lakes Community College after which he enrolled at the University of Fairbanks where he obtained a degree in Applied Science. Following his graduation and being an adventurous person right from childhood, Erik decided to relocate to Wiseman, 67 miles in the Arctic region to begin living the life he has always dreamed of.
In Wiseman, and with his knowledge of surviving in the wild, fishing, tracking, and hunting games, Salitan set up a guide and outfitting business which he named Bushwhack Alaska Guiding and Outfitting. Through this venture, he renders tour guides, accommodation, and food facilities in the Brooks Range and another in Peninsula to visitors desirous of having a tour in the Alaskan region.
In doing this, Erik Salitan has not only become successful; he has equally become famous in the region for his expertise in living and surviving strategies in the Alaskan wilderness. The tour guide is equally a member of various conservation and hunting groups some of which are the Northwest Sportsman Club and Alaska Professional Hunters Association.
Family: Wife and Son
Erik Salitan is a married man. He is the husband of Martha Mae Salitan, an Alaskan native who was born and raised in Iliamna. Martha compliments her husband in every way possible, having had the wilderness way of living ingrained in her.
Not much is known about how they met but seeing what they are both passionate about, we can easily make an inference that their passion brought them together. The couple is the parents of Lucas Salitan, their son who was born in 2010. Lucas studies at Wood River Elementary School. When school is not in session, he spends time with his parents as we have seen him many times in their hunting videos.
What Happened To The Life Below Zero Star?
Erik and Martha began as one of the original casts of Life Below Zero which premiered on the National Geographic Channel in May 2013 alongside other casts we have mentioned above.
The couple appeared in all 4 seasons of the show as it ran from 2013 to 2016 before they left. Initially, no reason was given as to why they left the show; none from the couple nor was there any from National Geographic Channel. When their absence became too obvious to ignore, some people began to make assumptions about why they left the show.
One of the several reasons offered had it that Erik Salitan became increasingly uncomfortable living a major part of his life in front of the camera. Though it has always been his ambition to live in the wilderness, his primary aim for it was not to be shown to all and sundry on TV.
Secondly, Erik had a thriving Alaskan tour business before he became a star of the show. Thus, he is first and foremost a hunter tour guide before becoming a television personality. Apparently, if the first assumption holds true as the reason why he left the show, this second reason buttresses the point that he craves a life outside of the reality television show.
The third assumption has to do with the demands of parenting. As you already know, the couple has a son who is responsible to raise as best as they can. Obviously, they can’t be doing that living in the wilderness of Alaska while their son goes to school in a town.
