At the 2018 Open Championships, there were many eyes resting on one of the greatest golfers of always, Tiger Woods, with many expecting that the tournament would see him record one of the best comebacks ever seen in sports. Unfortunately for him, that was not to happen; instead, it was the man pairing with him, Francesco Molinari that stole the show and had his name as the winner of the tournament. Molinari has come to be known as a golfer who turned professional in 2004 and since then, he has managed to shoot himself into the holes that won him many tournaments in his career thus far.

Francesco Molinari Bio

An Italian professional golfer, Francesco Molinari was born on 8 November 1982 in the Italian city of Turin. It was there that he was brought up alongside his brother, Edoardo Molinari who is also a professional golfer by their parents, Paolo Molinari and Micaela Molinari.

Growing up in Italy, it was not entirely easy for Francesco and his brother, most especially as they sought to be golfers. This is because since golf is not the most popular sport in the country, there were not many courses or facilities that they could use in training.

Nonetheless, the golfer who is nicknamed Chicco would get to pick up the sports from his architect father who used to play when Francesco was still just a child.

Having had his education from the University of Turin, what would obviously come to lead the life of the star is his involvement in golf, the same way as his elder brother with whom he would go on to conquer the world.

His professional career kicked off in 2004 after taking home the Italian Match Play Championship and then, having made the qualifying school, he earned a card for the  European Tour in 2005. By 2006, it was obvious that the golfing world had a new kid on the course after he became the second Italian to win the European Tour. The only time an Italian won the title was as far back as 1980 when Massimo Mannelli won the Telecom Italia Open.

By 2009, the Official World Golf Ranking had him among the top 50 golfers in the world. That was the year he led Italy to win the first World Cup in China alongside his brother. That victory was followed by the WGC-HSBC Champions which he won in November 2010 after defeating Lee Westwood. That saw him reaching the 14th spot in the ranking.

May 2012 saw Francesco Molinari winning a third European Tour title at the Reale Seguros Open de España before taking advantage of Tiger Wood’s miss of a final green to give Europe the 2012 Ryder Cup.

The younger Molinari became the first Italian to win the Italian Open twice when he went above Danny Willett in 2016 to clinch it. The year was a good one for him as he also ended second in the 2016 Open de France.

In 2018, Molinari won yet another European Tour which was his fifth when he won the BMW PGA Championship. He would go on again to win the Quicken Loans National and land himself in the sixth spot of the Golf Ranking when he won the 2018 Open Championship.

Thus far, he is one of the most successful Italian Professional golfers ever with 9 professional wins thus far.
