What Happened to his Hand (Finger)?

Gerald had an accident while he was still in his sixth grade in high school. Wearing his mother’s class ring on his right ring finger, he made an attempt to jam on a makeshift hoop attached to a doorway and the ring got caught on a nail and it automatically ripped his finger to the bone. The finger was eventually amputated according to the doctor’s recommendation. Speaking on the incident and how it affected his personality, Green said he had to deal with insecurity issues afterward as his colleagues both in high school and during his career made jokes about it. He also revealed that he never wanted people to know about it because it makes him feel like an outsider. However, the accident did not push him into dropping out of his basketball career. After he was able to tolerate the pain and shame, Green returned to the court with a bandage-wrapped hand and although the amputated finger made it impossible for him to palm a ball, he still tries to make his shots as he keeps doing until today.
