Gio Gonzalez is a professional baseball player who has made a name for himself playing in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Washington Nationals as a pitcher. Having made his league debut in 2008, he has played for Oakland Athletics before making it to the nationals. Here is all to know about him.

Gio Gonzalez’ Biography

He was born Giovany Aramis González on September 19, 1985, in Hialeah, Florida, and was raised alongside his two other brothers by their parents, Yolanda Cid-Gonzalez and Max Gonzalez of Cuban descent. His parents were very poor and had to make a lot of sacrifices to see them through, they took to menial jobs among others which Gio has talked about, reminding himself of how far he has come from nothing.

For his education, he graduated from the Monsignor Edward Pace High School where he transferred to after beginning at the Hialeah High School. He made a great show playing during his school days and as such, he skipped college for professional baseball and got selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 2004 MLB Draft.

Career and Stats

Soon after he was selected by the White Sox, Gio Gonzalez was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for Jim Thome alongside two others. That will not last as the next year, the White Sox would get him back via trade.

He played in the minor league until he was called to the majors in 2008 to play for the Oakland Athletics who got him from the White Sox in a trade. Gio remained with the team until 2012 when he was traded to the Washington Nationals in 2012.

Thus far, Gonzalez has enjoyed a great career, with 2 All-Star team appearances in 2011 and 2012, which was the same year he also won the NL wins leader.

Looking at his stats, he has played in 294 games, starting in 288 games. More so, Gio has also recorded 1717.2 pitched innings, 1527 hits, 742 runs, 686 earned runs, 144 home runs, and 46 hits batsmen. Gio has not been involved in many transfers in his career, but he has still signed his own fair share of contracts in the MLB. His contract with the Nationals is worth $42 million for 5 years leading to 2018. For the final year, 2018, his salary will is placed at $12 million.

Farther back, he received the same amount in 2016 and 2017. 2015 saw him earning a salary of 11 million, and in 2014, he was paid $8.5 million. In 2013, Gio’s salary was $6.25 million while it was $3.25 million in 2012.

Gio is married and the name of his wife is Berenice Lea Moures. Not much is known about their love story, but it is believed that they began dating in 2013 before deciding to push things up a little by getting engaged in 2014.

Inasmuch as there is no wedding date yet, Gonzalez and Berenice are referred to as man and wife with some saying they may have had a secret wedding. The union has two children. The name of the first who was born in 2016 is Enzo while the name of the second is not known.

Before meeting and settling down with his wife, the pitcher was previously rumored to be in a relationship with an American football player, Angela Rypien. The rumor began after the duo was spotted together and Angela who was born in 1991 left behind some hints that the two of them were dating. Before long, Gio came out to deny the rumor, stating that he only invited her to watch his game.

He sold his home in Florida in 2015 for $1.7 million.

He has a charity organization known as the Giving Individuals Opportunities (GIO) which he began to help people who cannot pay medical bills.
