Grigor Dimitrov is a well-known professional tennis player from the Balkan nation of Bulgaria. Having won the ATP titles eight times, he remains the country’s most successful male tennis player of all time and one of the top three in the World.

He is the first male tennis player of Bulgaria descent to win an ATP title in singles, reach a final in doubles, reaching the third round at a Grand Slam tournament, qualify for, and win, the ATP Finals.

Grigor Dimitrov was born in the Haskovo Province, Southern Bulgaria on the 16th day of May 1991 to tennis coach Dimitar and his wife Maria who was a sports teacher and also a former volleyball player.

Having parents who are into sports actually motivated his love and passion for the game early in life. According to Dimitrov, the first tennis racket he ever held was given to him by his mother and his father was his first coach.

His father remained his coach until he began winning junior tournaments and eventually went professional at age 16.

Career

Dimitrov actually began his career participating in junior tournaments. His first major junior title came at the age of fourteen when he won the U14 European title. In 2006, he took part in the Orange Bowl U16 boys singles and won, he was later named the Eddie Herr International 2007 Rising Star.

In 2007, he also took part in the Orange Bowl U18 boys singles, although, he didn’t win, he reached the US Open doubles final. That same year, the young Bulgarian was enrolled into the academy “Sanchez-Casal”, where he was under the tutelage of former Spanish professional tennis player Emilio Sánchez and tennis guru Pato Álvarez. After one year at “Sanchez-Casal”, he moved over to Paris and joined the Patrick Mouratoglou’s Tennis Academy where he spent the next four seasons.

The following year, he emerged as the Junior Wimbledon champion for 2008 after defeating Finland’s Henri Kontinen in the finals. He also won the 2008 US Open after defeating Devin Britton in two sets. After he won the US Open (Junior category), he won future tournaments in Madrid on hard court and this brought him 300 places to rank 477.

These tournaments and winnings further announced the young Bulgarian and earned him a wildcard into the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open qualifying draw but he lost to France’s Florent Serra. He was granted a second card, this time to the Davidoff Swiss Indoors qualifying draw where he had to face and defeat Jiří Vaněk in three sets in the first round to earn his first ATP level win, before finally losing to Julian Reister.

His first title at a futures tournament was in Barcelona, while his first ATP tournament came at the Ordina Open. The following year (2009), he reached the second round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. He earned his first ATP main draw win after the then world’s #23 Tomáš Berdych. That same year, he won his first doubles challenger title along with Teymuraz Gabashvili in ATP Challenger Trophy.

Although he reached his first ATP singles final in 2013, breaking records as the first Bulgarian player to reach an ATP final, Dimitrov won his first ATP title the following year (2014) and the records have been that way ever since. By the end of the 2017 season, the Bulgarian champion recorded 250 career match wins, 8 top-10 match wins, five Tour Finals, Four Tour Titles, first grand slam semi-final on hard courts, second grand slam semifinal, first Masters 1000 title, and first ATP Finals crown.

Grigor Dimitrov has also represented Bulgaria, twice in the Olympics. The first was 2012, London Olympics where he competed in the singles competition, his second Olympic appearance was at the 2016 Rio.
