Helena Bonham Carter’s Bio
If she were to follow in the footsteps of her ancestors, Helena Bonham Carter who was born on 26 May 1966 in Islington, London, England could have become a political figure. Her own father Raymond Bonham Carter (1929 – 2004) was a British banker who was a member of a British political family and worked in the Bank of England. Another famous political figure in her bloodline was her paternal grandmother Violet Asquith who was also a feminist icon. Asquith was the daughter of H. H. Asquith, who served as the UK Prime Minister for the first half of World War I.
Though born in Islington, Helena and her two older brothers Edward and Thomas were raised in Golders Green. She attended South Hampstead High School, and Westminster School, completing her A-levels at the latter. Helena had wanted to attend the Kings College in Cambridge but the school authorities were wary that she might drop out to pursue her passion in acting which she had begun pursuing since elementary school.
With money won from a 1979 national writing contest, Helena who had no formal acting training paid to become a member of the Spotlight directory. Her first professional acting job came in a TV commercial in 1982 when she was just 16 years old, and the rest is history.
Helena Bonham Carter got her big break in 1985, two years into her professional career. Her success came with the role of Lucy Honeychurch in A Room with a View and the British beau has not looked back since. Over the years, Helena has proved over an over again what an incredible actress she is. Her talent has helped to boost the commercial success of a number of films from Fight Club to The Harry Potter series where she played Bellatrix Lestrange. Her net worth has been estimated to fall between $30 million and $40 million.
Who is The Husband?
While Helena Bonham Carter is at the time of this writing a single woman, she has had two high profile long-term relationships in the past. But even though she stayed with these men for a long time, she never made it down the aisle with any of them hence, Helena Bonham Carter has never been officially married to anyone.
Her first high-profile boyfriend/partner was British actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh (pictured above). Helena was with him for five years from 1994 to 1999. Their love drew a lot of media attention as it was a result of an extramarital affair on Branagh’s part. At the time they started dating, Branagh was married to British actress Emma Thompson. Thompson and Branagh had met during the filming of BBC Series Fortunes of War after which they tied the knot in 1989.
Five years later, in 1994 Branagh met Carter on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and they began an affair together. A year into their romance, Branagh called it quits with his wife and continued his romance with Carter. However, it wasn’t set to last a lifetime as they went separate ways in 1999.
Emma Thompson who went on to marry Greg Wise in 2003 forgave Carter for the extramarital affair she had with her then-husband. Both even went on to act in the Harry Potter series together. On the other hand, Branagh seemed to have finally found what he wanted in film art director Lindsay Brunnock whom he married in 2003.
After two years of healing from her relationship with Branagh, Helena found love in the arms of ace American Filmmaker Tim Burton. Like her previous relationship, it began on a movie set. Burton had cast her in his 2001 science fiction film Planet of the Apes. He would go on to cast her in at least 6 of his films including Alice In Wonderland.
Having lived in adjoining houses in Belsize Park, London, they connected the two to form a home. Helena and Burton would come to be together for 13 years but were never married. Their relationship ended on amicable terms in early 2013. Their long-term relationship produced two kids; a son named Billy Raymond Burton, born in October 2003, and a daughter Nell Burton, born December 2007.
