The American rap star Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar was born in Manhattan, New York, on October 11, 1992. Although she was born in the United States, from her looks, one could easily guess she is of multiple races. Her mother is Trinidadian and Spanish while her father is Dominican. Cardi B grew up in South Bronx, Highbridge where she spent much of her early years with her paternal grandmother. She also claimed to have developed her thick accent from there. Her stage name Cardi B was coined from her previous nickname Bacardi.
Cardi B was asthmatic when she was much younger. It made her mother uneasy and she would often stay awake at night to avoid losing her to an asthma attack. That illness is all in the past now.

She was, however, fired, after which she went in search of better opportunities as her pay from the job was not yielding much income. She started working as a stripper at the age of 19. Cardi claimed being a stripper freed her from her financial problems. It also helped her to muster the courage to leave her abusive boyfriend who she was living with.
