Hue Jackson played basketball and also participated in football as a quarterback in his amateur playing career. After college, he went against the grain and started a coaching career in lieu of a professional playing career.
The Los Angeles native has held various coaching positions at franchises like the Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins, and the Atlanta Falcons. Most recently, he was brought on as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2016.
Hue Jackson’s Biography
Jackson’s life story began on October 22, 1965. Hue’s playing days started in his hometown, at Dorsey High School. Here, he was also a Letterman basketball player. He subsequently attended Glendale (CA) Community College in 1983 where he also played as a quarterback.
Post-Glendale, he moved on to the University of the Pacific where he turned up for the football team in the 1985 and 1986 seasons. At the end of his time at the institution, he had recorded 19 touchdowns, throwing for 2,544 yards, and acquired a degree in physical education.
Hue Jackson’s coaching career started in the same place his playing career ended – the University of the Pacific. He was at Pacific for three years, ending in 1989 before moving to Cal State Fullerton the following year as special teams coordinator and running backs coach. In 1991, he spent some time at the London Monarchs before moving to Arizona State University for the next four years, first as running backs coach and then as quarterback coach.
Hue fulfilled the same responsibilities in 1996 at the University of California, Berkeley, and helped them secure a spot in the Aloha Bowl. He then moved over to the University of South California for the 1997 season and stayed on till 2000, having trained star quarterbacks like Carson Palmer.
NFL Career
After his time at USC, Hue Jackson turned professional with his first NFL job. He was brought on as the Washington Redskins running backs coach from 2001 to 2002. His exceptional work with players like Stephen Davis saw him promoted to offensive coordinator in 2003.
He continued to build his profile and reputation as a coaching staff when he joined the Cincinnati Bengals in 2004 as a wide receivers coach. His appointment immediately reflected in the fierce partnership of Chad Johnson and T. J. Houshmandzadeh. His work with these two contributed immensely to the team’s AFC North title win and their first playoff spot in 15 years.
At the end of the 2006 season, he moved on to the Atlanta Falcons and stayed there for the 2007 season before leaving for the Baltimore Ravens ahead of the 2008 season. In his two seasons there, he served as quarterbacks coach and was instrumental in Joe Flacco’s incredible rookie playoff record.
The Oakland Raiders came calling in 2010 and Hue answered. His work as offensive coordinator immediately began to reflect in the team’s offensive stats for the NFL and AFC as they more than doubled their scoring record from 2009.
Following his immense work for the season, Hue Jackson was rewarded with the highest coaching role in the NFL – he became the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. This lasted for only one season though as he was let go and he returned to the Cincinnati Bengals, this time as assistant defensive backs coach and also as part of the special teams coaching staff. He became the running backs coach in 2013 and then the offensive coordinator in 2014. He clinched the PFWA NFL assistant coach of the year in 2015.
Cleveland Browns swooped in and snapped him up in January 2016 to serve as head coach for the franchise. He ended his debut season with a single win from the regular season and followed that up without a single win from the 2017 regular season.
