Iman Shumpert was born in Oak Park, Illinois on the 26th of June 1990. He attended Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School, located in Oak Park, Illinois. Whilst there, he was on the school’s basketball team with would-be professional NBA player, . Moving on, Iman was then enrolled in the Oak Park and River Forest High School, where he also joined the school’s basketball team. He helped Oak Park clinch three conference titles, was named a first team all-state player and earned himself the title of the “Conference MVP” both as a junior and a senior in school.
On the completion of his high school education, he gained admission into Georgia Tech in 2008. During his freshman year in the school’s basketball team, Iman averaged a total of 10.5 points and hit 34.5 percent of his three-point attempts. By the end of the 2010-2011 season, he became one of the conference’s all-defensive team member and was also named to the All-ACC second team. He would later forgo his final year of college eligibility when he declared for the NBA draft on the 28th of March 2011.
Professional Career
Iman Shumpert’s professional career began when the New York Knicks drafted him with the 17th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. On the 28th of April 2012, he was part of the squad selected to face off against the Miami Heat team. During the first round playoff, Iman sustained a knee injury which caused him to miss the rest of the season. However, considering his previous performance before the injury, he got a first-place vote as well as a total of 33 votes from a ballot filled by various broadcasters from the country as well as 120 writers. These votes did well to make him end the season in the 5th position during the 2012 NBA Rookie of the Year voting.
In the summer league game against the New Orleans Pelicans in July 2013, Iman recorded 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 points. However, the Knicks lost the game by 72-77. He was then traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on the 5th of January 2015 and made his debut for the team on the 23rd of January in a match played against Charlotte Hornets. His contract was revised to a whopping $40 million on the 9th of July 2015. He was later traded to the Sacramento Kings on the 8th of February 2018.
