A list of the most prominent models of the 2010s would not be complete without the inclusion of Gigi Hadid, the British Fashion Council’s international model of the year 2016. Born in Los Angeles and under contract to the world-famous agency IMG Models, she is a natural talent in what she does, unlike others in the industry who were only discovered at a later age. This is because Hadid started modeling when she was a toddler. Since then she has become one of the highest paid supermodels in the world, has appeared on the cover of numerous magazines and has walked the catwalk for some of the world’s most famous designers.
How Gigi Hadid Began Modeling?
Gigi Hadid started modeling for Baby Guess when she was two years old after being discovered by fashion designer and co-founder of Guess clothing Paul Marciano. It is not clear how long she modelled for the company before she stopped focusing on training.
The young girl then went to Malibu High School, where she took part in some sports activities. Hadid was a tournament rider and also captain of the school’s volleyball team. After graduating in 2013, she enrolled at the New School in New York to study criminal psychology as she wanted to take her modeling career to the next level.
However, two years before graduating from high school, Hadid returned to work for Marciano and Guess and was named the face of their 2012 campaign. Her wish to combine her training and her work as a model did not come true as she had imagined, so she had to drop out of college to concentrate on her career.
Highlights of Her Modeling Career
After making the decision to focus on her modeling career, Gigi Hadid signed with IMG Models in 2013. Things began to happen for her immediately when she made her debut at New York Fashion Week in early 2014 and appeared on the covers of Galore and CR Fashion Book magazines. Before the year ended, she co-hosted the Fashion Media Awards event for The Daily Front Row and worked on several campaigns for Tom Ford.
In her second year as a professional model, Gigi was named “The Daily Front Row Model of the Year”. She has also been named brand ambassador for the Australian fashion swimwear label Seafolly and brand ambassador for the cosmetics, skin and body care company Maybelline.
The magazines she covered this year included several international editions of Vogue, Teen Vogue, Numero, W Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and Allure and many others. She has also worked for designers such as Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Michael Kors, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Max Mara before making her first appearance at Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in December 2015.
In 2016, the year she was named International Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards and earned her wings at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Gigi Hadid was named Global Brand Ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger and Brand Ambassador for Reebok. She also designed a capsule collection called Gigi by Tommy Hilfiger together with Tommy Hilfiger, as well as a boot collection for Stuart Weitzman called Gigi Boot.
