Cedric the Entertainer as his stage name rightfully suggests is an all-round entertainer. He has been involved in everything entertainment from acting to comedy and game show hosting. He has worked with many stars such as Spike Lee and Steve Harvey. Having started his career back in the 1980s, Cedric has come to be recognized for a lot of things including hosting the 12th season of America’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. 

The professional side of his life is something that has not been hidden from the public, most especially as it regards his successes. Nonetheless, his struggles and personal life have continued to remain pretty much unknown.

The Highs and Lows of Cedric the Entertainer’s Career

1. Early years and struggles

While growing up, Cedric’s father was not around as he lived in Memphis as such the comedian was raised by his mother.

He discovered very early that he could captivate people with his comedy prowess, but before deciding to go into the show business, he went to school and graduated from Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication.

He would go on to work for State Farm Insurance before kicking off his acting and comedy career.

2. The start of his career

It was in 1987 that Cedric started his career with an appearance on It’s Showtime at the Apollo. By 1993, his career had taken more definite shape when he appeared as the host of the comedy show Def Comedy Jam. He made great strides when he joined the BET network where he hosted Comicview. 

Cedric The Entertainer got his first acting role in 1996 when he got to play Cedric Robinson on The Steve Harvey Show. Next, he appeared in the 1998 film, Ride which was followed in 2000 by Big Momma’s House. From this point, he kept getting more acting roles including voice acting gigs such as in Ice Age (2002) and Madagascar (2005).

3. Cedric the Entertainer Presents

In 2002, he started his sketch comedy TV series, Cedric the Entertainer Presents. The show was an instant hit on Fox where it aired but by 2003 when it was set to release for its second season, he hit one of his first lows as an entertainer; Fox canceled the show and that became the end of it.

4. The Barbershop Controversy 

Although Cedric is not one that is known for courting controversies, he found himself at the other side of the anger of civil rights activists when his character in the show, Eddie Walker made a remark considered unpopular against civil rights icons like Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.

At the end of it, he didn’t apologize for his improvisation even when he got calls from people like Jesse Jackson, the family of Rosa Parks, and many others. Cedric insisted he did not make the statement, it was instead, the character in the show so people could call Eddie Walker and not him

5. It’s Worth What? TV game show

He recorded another success when he started his reality TV game show, It’s Worth What? in 2011. Unfortunately, the show came to an end only after a season.

6. Awards and Accolades

His efforts have not gone unnoticed as he has got a number of awards and nominations for his works. In 1994, he got BET’s Richard Pryor Comic of the Year Award for his outstanding performances. A 2008 inductee of the  St. Louis Walk of Fame, Cedric has 4 NAACP Image Awards to his name.

His shortlived show, Cedric the Entertainer Presents was nominated for a number of awards including the Emmy Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and Image Awards.

7. How rich is Cedric the Entertainer?

The comic star has worked hard for himself since he started his career decades ago. His involvement in comedy, movies, and hosting among other things. Thanks to all these, he has amassed a net worth of over $15 million.

Beyond making money, he has also been involved in philanthropic works. In the years past, he has supported many foundations and charities including the American Stroke Association, Ante Up For Africa, and Diamond Empowerment Fund. He also has the Cedric “The Entertainer” Charitable Foundation.

Who are Cedric the Entertainer’s Family Members?

Cedric Antonio Kyles, as the entertainer was born, was brought up in the small family of  Kittrell Kyles and his wife Rosetta in Jefferson City, Missouri. He was raised together with his only sister Sharita Kyles Wilson in Caruthersville, Missouri. Cedric has remained ever close with Sharita who now works as a communications instructor.

While his father spent his working years with the Missouri Pacific Railroad (MoPac) and AT&T, his mother worked as a school teacher. Rosetta died in 2015 following a lengthy struggle with cancer since she was diagnosed in 2009. In her honor, her children built The Rosetta Boyce Kyles Women’s Pavilion at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis.

A year before he lost his mother, Cedric’s father was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Fortunately, he got treated before it became complicated.

Just like his blossoming career, Cedric also enjoys a great married life. In 1999, he got married to his longtime girlfriend, Lorna Wells on December 3. Wells has managed to keep so much about herself away from the public domain. The amazing couple is blessed with three children, a son named Croix Kyles who was born in 2000 and a daughter, Lucky Rose Kyles who was born in 2003. Lucky is an actress who is known for her role in The Soul Man which ran from 2014 to 2016. There is also TinkyFlonz Kyles who is the least known of the entertainer’s children. He also has a daughter Tiara Kyles from his previous relationship.

Cedric The Entertainer currently resides with his family in Missouri and also has a mansion in Chatsworth, California.
