The diversity in human society is often characterized by our different talents, looks, belief systems, sexuality, and myriad other things. Such is the story of Hayley Kiyoko, an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Find out below about her sexuality and her struggles.
Background (Early Life and Career)
The name Hayley Kiyoko and/or Hayley Kiyoko Alcroft will not sound too strange to adults from the 90s and everyone else who have ears for the dream-pop and synth-pop music genre. She is an American actress, singer, and songwriter born on the 3rd of April 1991 in Los Angeles, California.
She was born to parents who pursued no ordinary careers; her mother – Sarah Kawahara a Canadian with Japanese ancestry is a figure skater/choreographer while her father – Jamie Alcroft who is from Ohio but has English, Welsh, Irish and German ancestry is a known actor, voice actor and comedian with a slew of works in films, television series, and video games. Hayley has two siblings Alysse and Thatcher both of whom she was raised with by their parents.
Growing up, Hayley began to show signs of her musical talent from a very young age much to the delight of her art-inclined parents. Similarly, in her school, she was also an outstanding student who served as the President of her freshman class in both middle and high school, Commissioner of Entertainment in her sophomore, Commissioner of Pep Rallies in her junior year, and the Vice-president in her senior year of high school.
Upon her graduation, Hayley Kiyoko enrolled at Clive Davis School of Recorded Music at New York University where she studied for some time before leaving to pursue her music career full-time.
With regards to her career and how she started off, Hayley Kiyoko was discovered as a 5-year-old model when she went for a photoshoot with her friend. From this encounter, she began making appearances on commercials for various company products as well as being featured on the advert pages of newspapers.
She was still in middle school at this time which afforded her the opportunity to continue honing her skills in school plays. At this same time, Hayley was also honing her musical skills going for music lessons, writing her own songs, and releasing them to be sold in local music stores.
As Hayley Kiyoko got older, she formed a garage band in 2007 called Hede (named after her grandfather) and also had her father secure the services of an agent in hope of getting auditions for films. Hede enjoyed some amount of success locally till they disbanded in 2009 when its members left for college.
Around this same time, Alcroft landed a big film role as Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins. When it premiered on Cartoon Network, it was a huge success with millions of views and the rest became history. Musically, Hayley Kiyoko had her big break with This Side of Paradise (2015) which had one of its singles “Girls Like Girls” go on to be a huge commercial success.
Is Hayley Kiyoko Gay or Lesbian? Does She Have a Girlfriend?
Hayley Kiyoko is a lesbian who understood and accepted her sexual preference as a 6-year-old. Reports have it that at the time, she was crushing on a female teacher who taught her how to swim, but couldn’t express her feelings. As she got older, her penchant for people of the same sex persisted even as she struggled with the fears of being rejected and facing criticism should she out.
While Alcroft struggled with the realities of being a gay woman, she understood and felt to a large extent the pains of what so many other young gay people in her shoes were passing through. Added to this, she was unable to express her feelings in her songs but after listening to I Kissed a Girl by and Canadian Indie Pop duo of Tegan and Sara, she became bold and confident about who she really is and even regretted not coming out earlier than she did. On the other hand, Hayley Kiyoko has not revealed who her girlfriend is, probably she is still searching.
She produced the song “Mercy/Gatekeeper” which was about her depression, the single Girls Like Girls spoke about her struggles and earned her the title of ‘lesbian Jesus’. She champions a new face of the LGBTQ community away from the narrative that has dominated discussions about them for a long time now. Her debut album Expectations (2018) was all about love for women in the advancement of the LGBTQ cause.
