There has been word on the street about a new Predator movie hitting the cinemas in a couple of years and this will be the fifth film in one of the biggest franchises in entertainment. The idea of a franchise in the film industry is founded on telling the same story in many different ways while maintaining certain aspects, this is mostly a result of a tried formula that audiences love. This practice is a very lucrative part of the film industry, the Predator franchise – books, novels, and comics have been created from the original 1987 film. Is There Going To Be A New Predator Movie
All the storylines that have built the franchise are a result of the efforts of Jim and John Thomas, the brains behind the plot and the first two films. The brothers crafted the story of the first film in 1984. The first film was released three years after – in 1987; it featured in the lead role of Major Allan, who had been given the herculean task of rescuing some civilians who were being held captive by an alien hunter called the Predator. These people were being held in a part of the Central American Jungle.
The first film was made on a budget of $18 million and was able to make $98.7 million. Its box office success was not reflective of the critical response that the film got as critics mostly had mixed reviews; all of which changed with the release of more films and as the franchise got older, views on the films started to change as well.
The Thomas brothers were only part of the production process of the first two films and the next film was released in 2010 which is a lot of years after the release of the second predator film in 1990. These two films were sequels of the first film. The most recent film installment was released in September of 2018, with Fred Dekker and Shane Black writing the screenplay.
Prior to the release of the Predators (2010), there were crossover films that feature the character of the predator, these films are part of the Alien vs. Predator Franchise and they are Alien vs. Predator released in 2004 and the 2007 Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. These films served as filler for the lack of new Predator movies between 1990 and 2010.
John Davis who produced the 2010 and 2018 films stated in an interview that there are plans in motion for a new Predator movie to be made. The plan is to make two new films, but as Davis said, the process involved in making these movies can be long and tedious.
Will It Be A Sequel Or A Remake?
The new Predator movies that are expected to be released in a few years will follow the story of the previous four films. When the second movie was made, it was a sequel of the events that took place in the first film and despite the lag of many years between Predator 2 and Predators which is the third film, the story still continued from where it halted in 1990. The story in Predator 2 continues in Los Angeles with the alien hunter from the first film killing gang members while evading the police who have a tough time catching him.
The timeline of the 1990 film happens ten years after the events in the first film. The third film is written in the same pattern and it features an ensemble of characters who have been kidnapped for sport by some extraterrestrial beings. The only film that has deviated from this sequel pattern is The Predator which was released in 2018. The events in this film are a prequel to the happenings in the first film.
For the expected releases, John Davis, who is in charge of production, says that they will be sequels of the 2018 films and not remakes. His plan is to make a trilogy; the 2018 movie will serve as the first part of the trilogy while he wants to make two more films to complete it, all of which will make the prequel trilogy.
