She was born Ivana Zelníčková on the 20th of February 1949 in Zlin (formerly known as Gottwaldov) Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia). Her father, Miloš Zelníček was a Czech native and her mother Marie Francová was from Austria. She got involved in athletics from a very tender age and she got all the support she needed from her father.
Ivana started participating in skiing at an early age and before she turned 6, she was already good in the game. By the age of 12, Ivana was enrolled at a training camp for child skiers where she further honed her skills. She had her college education at Charles University in Prague and during which she claimed to have been selected as a reserve on the Czechoslovak ski team for the 1972 Winter Olympics.
