It takes courage, endurance, talent, and sheer willpower to make it into the top 10 in the rankings of any professional sport. Since November 20, 2017, Jack Sock can boast of having achieved this feat with his career-highest ranking as world No. 8 in professional tennis.
As a former US Open junior champion, Sock’s mastery of the singles game has earned him the title of the 2017 Paris Masters and a place in the semi-finals of the 2017 ATP Finals. This is not to say that he is not practiced in doubles. In 2014 Jack Sock won the Wimbledon Grand Slam Championship with his team-mate Vasek Pospisil and pushed both men into the top 10 of the ATP doubles ranking. At the side of Melanie Oudin, he also won the mixed doubles title at the US Open.
Jack Sock’s Bio
Jack was born on September 24, 1992, in Lincoln, Nebraska. When he was 12 years old, he moved to Kansas with his mother and his older brother Eric. Here Jack and Eric trained at the Mike Wolf Tennis Academy.
During his high school years at Blue Valley North High School, he won four state championships in a row and ended his high school career with an unbeaten 80-0 record. In his second year, he teamed up with his brother to win the team state championship. After Eric’s graduation, he won two more. Jack Sock continued his playing career at the University of Nebraska.
He began his professional career in 2009 with the Futures, where he won his first senior national team title the same year. Sock participated in the 2010 US Open and finished the season in 878th place in the world. He also took part in the US Open 2011 and lost in the second round to Andy Roddick, who was his idol in his youth. Jack finished 2011 in 370th place in doubles and 381st place in singles.
The following year, Sock made it to the quarter-finals of the 2012 BB&T Atlanta Open, where he lost to John Isner. Jack then won the 2012 Tiburon Challenger but lost in the final of the Champaign-Urbana Challenger. With these successes, his world ranking rose to 150 points for the first time in his career.
In 2013, despite a slow start, he won his second title at the Challenger level and made it into the top 100, ending the season with a world ranking of 86th at the US Open.
In 2014, Jack Sock played in the Heineken Open, where he scored a memorable victory in straight sets against the world’s number 12, Tommy Hass. In the same year, he won his first Wimbledon title in the men’s doubles category after playing with Vasek Pospisil.
He ended the year with a hip injury and in December 2014 he had to undergo an operation that excluded him from the start of the 2015 season.
He returned to the BNP Paribas Open 2015 and secured victory in his first three games before finally losing to veteran Roger Federer in the fourth round. In the doubles, however, he reunited with Pospisil and together they won their first title at Masters level.
After winning the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in 2015, he recorded remarkable victories over Grigor Dimitrov on his way to becoming the youngest American since 1993 to advance to the quarter-finals of the French Open. In the fourth round, he lost to Rafael Nadal. He finished the year in 25th place in the world rankings.
Jack Sock teamed up with Serena Williams and then Victoria Duval at the 2016 Hopman Cup. This win brought Sock into the top 20 for the first time in his career, and after playing for the United States in the Davis Cup, he won his second consecutive title against Milos Raonic at the Delray Beach Open in 2017. He also won against the likes of Kei Nishikori, making it his first win against a top 5 name.
Jack also won the biggest title of his career so far – the Paris Masters. This made him the first American to win it since Andre Agassi in 1999, and the first American to win a Masters tournament since Andy Roddick’s Miami Masters victory in 2010. He finished in the top 10 of the world rankings in 2017.
Due to his hectic 2017 season, Jack Sock had a shorter off-season, as evidenced by his miserable 2018 retirements. He was unable to defend his title at the Auckland Open because he dropped out in the first round of the competition. Jack also had a poor performance at the 2018 Delray Beach Open and lost his title when he dropped out in the second round. However, he won the doubles title with Jackson Withrow. At the BNP Paribas Open, he won his second title in doubles this season together with John Isner.
