Jason Thomas Butler Harner was born on the 9th of October 1970 in Elmira, New York, United States. Born to Freddy William Harner and Neena Butler, Jason spent his early years in the suburban area of Northern Virginia. As a child, Jason schooled at C. Williams High School, Alexandria, Virginia, and graduated in 1988. While there, the actor was the president of the school’s drama club. He spent most of his time building sets instead of acting, only because most of his relatives were plumbers and carpenters. He also featured in several plays organized at Washington D.C.’s Arena Stage.

Soon after his graduation from high school, he went on to work briefly as an usher at the Eisenhower Theatre. From there, he enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he acquired a degree in Acting in 1992. Afterward, he served as an apprentice at the Actors Theatre of Louisville for a while before moving to New York City to further his studies.
