Jason Peters is arguably one of the Philadelphia Eagles’ best players. Jason was born in Queen City, Texas to Bishop J. Peters and Teledeo Simington on the 22nd day of January 1982 as Jason Raynard Peters, one of the four children his parents have. He has three brothers namely Jerry, Tim, and Will Peters.
Jason attended Queen City High School (TX), where he played both basketball and football. After high school, he played college football at the University of Arkansas. The Arkansas Razorbacks football Originally recruited him as a defensive tackle, but he spent his freshman year as a reserve defensive lineman but was moved to the tight end position during his Sophomore year. He caught 4 passes for thirty-seven yards.
As a junior, he recorded twenty-one catches for 218 yards and 4 touchdowns, this record earned him a second-team All-SEC selection.
Professional Career
During his senior season, he recorded more knockdown blocks than catches and thus spent time drilling and projecting himself to the NFL as an offensive tackle prior to the 2004 NFL Draft. Sports Illustrated projected him as an early fourth-round pick but he eventually went undrafted.
The Buffalo Bills would later pick him as an undrafted free agent in April 2004 and re-sign him to their practice squad. By November of the same year, he was moved to the active roster where he began making marks as a wedge buster on kickoffs and also as a blocking tight end. Jason Peters also began learning to play in the offensive tackle position under coach Jim McNally (offensive line coach).
In 2006, Peters was rewarded with a five-year contract extension worth $15 million after beating former Texas star Mike Williams for starting right tackle. He would begin the 2007 season as the right tackle but would later be moved to the left tackle to replace Mike Gandy who was moved to the left guard.
He was selected to start at left tackle on the AFC Pro-Bowl team and became the first Bills’ offensive lineman to be selected to the Pro Bowl after Ruben Brown but he, unfortunately, couldn’t attend due to a groin injury he sustained in a game against the New York Giants and was replaced by Joe Thomas.
The following season which happened to be his last season with the Bills, he was selected to start the left tackle in the Pro Bowl and was also a Second-team All-Pro. That season was plagued with a lot of issues between Jason Peters and the Bills. During the offseason, Jason became unhappy about his pay and wanted his contract reviewed.
His anger was fueled by the fact that despite his being the team’s only Pro Bowl blocker, he was only the 3rd highest-paid offensive lineman, he demanded for $8 million and $11.5 million per season in a contract extension and when his demands were not considered, he wouldn’t show up in training camp all through the preseason games.
In August 2008. the Buffalo Bills signed Dustin Dickinson to help Langston Walker fill the void created by Jason Peters’ absence. The next month, Peters returned to the team and was fined more than $560,000 for missing out of the training camp.
The next season (2009), the Bills traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for their 1st round and 4th round picks in the 2009 NFL Draft and a conditional 6th round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Eagle would later sign Jason Peters to a 6-year, $60 million contracts which was meant to keep him on their team till the end of the 2014 season. At the expiration of the contract, Peters signed another five-year contract with the Eagles worth $51.3 million.
During his close to a decade career with the Eagles, Jason Peters has been selected to both the 2010 Pro Bowl and the 2011 Pro Bowl as a starter. He was also a 2010 second-team All-Pro selection. In 2017, he signed a one-year contract extension with the Eagles.
Although Peters had to end his 2017 season prematurely due to a right knee injury, he still earned his first Super Bowl ring after the Eagle went ahead to win the Super Bowl LII without him in a game against the New England Patriots which ended in a 41-33 win.
