There are a few people in the world who need very little introduction and international tennis star Johanna Konta certainly belongs to this select class. She originally represented her country of Australia but her allegiance swung to Great Britain since 2012. This switch in allegiance has proved to be very beneficial to Britain as Konta has become one of the most successful female tennis stars to represent the country in so many years.

On an individual level, Konta has won several titles on the WTA Tour and also on the ITF Women’s Circuit. Between 2015 and 2016, she had a meteoric rise through the WTA rankings and ultimately became the first British woman in over 3 decades to reach the top 10 in women’s tennis.

Johanna Konta was born in Sydney, Australia on the 17th day of May 1991. Her parents are both Hungarian emigrants who met in Australia. Her mother Gabriella is a dentist and her father Gábor earned his living as a hotel manager. She has one half-sibling, a sister named Eva Emese from her father’s earlier marital union.

Konta was not necessarily an early bloomer as she was first introduced to tennis when she was eight years old. At age 14, she was sent to Barcelona, Spain where she schooled at the Sanchez Casal Academy. At the same time, her family relocated to East Sussex, England and Konta joined them after her overseas studies in Spain. She became a citizen of Great Britain in May 2012 and simultaneously switched her sporting allegiance from her native country of Australia to Great Britain. Interestingly, she holds the passports of Britain, Australia, as well as her parents’ native country of Hungary.

Career

Johanna Konta’s winning ways dates back to May 2008 when she won her first ITF title as a teenager. The tournament was held in the city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She won 5 more ITF titles in the three years that followed which helped her advance through the world rankings of women’s tennis. She rose from number 668 in early 2009 to number 248 in 2011.

2012 was a particularly big year for the tennis star as she recorded several career milestones. In addition to winning her 7th ITF singles title in February 2012, she also recorded her first match win on the WTA tour and recorded her first match win at a Grand Slam event in the first round of the 2012 US Open. With these accomplishments, she successfully made an entry into the world’s top 150 rankings for the first time in her career.

Konta added 2 more ITF titles to her stash in 2013 and despite having a rather tumultuous 2014, she was able to break into the top 100 for the first time by July 2014. She clinched 2 more ITF titles in 2015 and among other achievements, she overtook Heather Watson to become British number one for the first time in her career. 2016 was another big year for Johanna Konta as she reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships, won her first WTA title at the Stanford Classic and also made her way into the top 10 of the women’s rankings.

She won her second and 3rd WTA titles at the 2017 Apia International Sydney and the 2017 WTA Premier Mandatory events respectively. Konta equally reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the Wimbledon Championships in 2017. These brilliant performances propelled her to a new career-high ranking of world number 4 in July 2017. The tennis star was, however, unable to maintain her top form in the 2018 tennis season, no thanks to some major injury woes.

Johanna Konta is in a relationship with Jackson Wade, a professional in photography. Their romance became known to the public in the year 2017 though it appears that they both got together earlier than this. While Konta is well known for her prowess on the court, her boyfriend Wade holds a first class degree in digital filmmaking from the SEA Institute. He equally served as a Digital Film Making Degree Programme Supervisor at the institute after graduating in 2014.

Also in 2014, Jackson Wade became the co-owner of 90SecondStory, a video advertising company based in Boho Four, Middlesbrough and he has served as the Video and Photography Manager of the Lawn Tennis Association since April 2016. He also serves as the director of several media companies.
