John Lithgow was born on October 19, 1945, in Rochester, New York to former actress Sarah Jane and Arthur Washington Lithgow III, who managed the McCarter Theatre located at Princeton, New Jersey. Although no details are available about his early education, Lithgow is known to have gone to Harvard College where he earned an A.B. magna cum laude in history and literature upon his graduation in 1967.
