Josh Norman is arguably one of the best cornerbacks in the National Football League (NFL). Before signing a 5-year contract with the Washington Redskins, Josh began his professional career with the Carolina Panthers, who selected him in the 5th round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He also played college football at Coastal Carolina and participated in the 26th of the celebrity series Dancing with the Stars where he finished as a runner-up.

Josh Norman’s Biography

Josh was born in Greenwood Carolina on the 15th of December, 1987 as Joshua Ricardo Norman. He attended Greenwood High School where he began playing the game of American football. Josh was part of the school’s team that won the South Carolina State Championship in 2006.

He was also named an All-State football player and was among the few that were picked to participate in the North-South All-Star Game. To further boost his competence, Josh Norman was named to the All-Lakeland Region 4A on offense. Asides the game of football, Josh also participated in other games like baseball, basketball, and track events back in his days at Greenwood High School.

Despite his decorated high school career, Josh didn’t get any scholarship offers from any Division I schools, thus, after high school, he moved in with his brother Marrio Norman who was also into the game and had gotten a full football scholarship at Coastal Carolina. To better himself while waiting for the right opportunity, he began taking courses at Horry Georgetown Tech and by 2008, he was offered a spot on Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team as a walk-on.

As a freshman, he appeared in twelve games and started seven. His first start was in the game against North Carolina A&T, where he also recorded his first interception. He would later record twenty-six solo tackles and thirty-five total tackles to be ranked the 9th most tackles on the team. Josh would later record nine pass defences and two interceptions and be ranked the Big South.

His seven tackle, one interception, and one pass defence performance also earned him a Big South Freshman of the Week honours. For his second year, Coastal Carolina offered him a scholarship for his good works so far and he did not disappoint. The Associated Press named him the third-team All-American, he also earned the first team All-Big South and made it on the list of Sporting News’ “Fabulous Fifty” All-American team.

It was also during his Sophomore season that he broke the school record and was ranked #2 in the nation with 8 interceptions. He also ranked 3rd in interceptions per game with 0.73. Josh then went ahead and won the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, as well as the National Defensive Player of the Week.

In his junior season, he recorded fifty-six tackles and was ranked 5th on the team and third in the Big South with nine pass defences. Josh would end his college career with eleven career interceptions and pass breakups with 23 pass breakups to become the second to make such records in the history of the school.

NFL Career

Norman was selected 143rd overall by the Carolina Panthers in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft and became the 3rd Carolina player to ever be drafted, after Tyler Thigpen, who was drafted in 2007 and Jerome Simpson who was drafted the following year (2008).

During his rookie season, he appeared in sixteen games, started twelve, and recorded his first career interception during a game against Chicago Bears. Josh would end his rookie season with seventy-three tackles, seven passes defended and one interception.

He didn’t have a very impressive second season. Although the Panthers rose to become NFL’s second-best defence that season after it finished 1st in the league with sixty sacks 2nd in points per game, and 3rd in DVOA defence, Josh Norman only appeared in 7 games and was inactive in the rest.

In 2015, he was named First-team All-Pro for the season and ranked eleventh on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016. In April 2016, the Franchise revoked its tag on Norman after the two parties failed to reach an agreement on a long-term deal. Following this decision, Josh became an unrestricted free agent and in that same month, he signed a five-year, deal with the Washington Redskins worth $75 million.

With his latest deal, Norman became the highest paid cornerback in the history of the NFL at the time, surpassing Darrelle Revis’ $36 million contract with the New York Jets in 2015. He started every single game that season and ended the season with sixty-seven tackles, nineteen passes, 3 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles.

At the end of the season, he was named by his peers as the 59th best player in the NFL Top 100 Players of the year (2017). During a game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Norman sustained an injury that kept him away from the game for the rest of the season.

Josh is not married but has been in a relationship with Keisha Thomas. The duo reportedly began dating from 2012 and have a child together.

In 2018, Blast.com reported that Josh Norman was in a legal fight with one Melody Woods who he claimed to have had a casual relationship with which resulted in her becoming pregnant and giving birth to a baby girl named Blake in January 2018. According to Josh, a DNA test confirms he is the father and he is seeking for custody and visitation rights.
