Biography

Born on 22 December 1985 as Kate Esther Calvert, Tempest grew up as one of five children in South East London. Between the ages of 14 and 18, she worked in a record shop and joined the Thomas Tallis School before leaving school at the age of 16 to study Performing Arts and Technology at BRIT School. She later graduated in English Literature at the Goldsmiths University of London.

At the age of 16, she made her first appearance at open-mic nights in a small hip-hop shop in Carnaby Street in London’s West End, known as Deal Real.

Later she supported acts like John Cooper Clarke, Benjamin Zephaniah and Billy Bragg. Her band Sound of Rum had an international tour but was disbanded in 2012. Shortly after that Tempest was commissioned to write her first piece entitled “Wasted”.

The following year, Tempest published her first book of poetry entitled “Everything Speaks in its Way”. It was a limited edition printed on her imprint, Zingaro. When she turned 26, she published another work entitled “Brand New Ancients”, a theatrical spoken piece at Battersea Arts Centre. This move earned her wonderful reviews and embarrassed her after winning the Herald Angel and the Ted Hughes Prize.

In September 2013, her play Hopelessly Devoted premiered at the Birmingham Rep Theatre after being produced by Paines Plough.

In 2014 Tempest worked with Dan Carey on her album Everybody Down, which she released the same year and for which she was nominated for the Mercury Prize 2014.

Later that year, in October, Hold Your Own – her book of poetry – was released to great commercial and critical acclaim. At the same time, Tempest was named Poet of the Next Generation.

In 2016 Bloomsbury published her first novel, The Bricks That Built The Houses. It became a Sunday Times bestseller and later won the Books Are My Bag Best Breakthrough Author Award.

Tempest curated the Brighton Festival in 2017 and her album “Let Them Eat Chaos” (which she released in 2016) debuted at number 28 on the British album charts. The same album was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2017, and she was also nominated for the Brit Awards 2018 for Best British Solo Performer.

Kate Tempest has been nominated for several awards and has won a number of them.

Kate Tempest’s father, Nigel Calvert, was a worker who – during her childhood – attended night school while retaining his job as a worker and looked after a family of five children to become an entertainment lawyer at the age of eight. This formed in her a work ethic that led her to the success she enjoys today.

In 1996, Nigel Calvert then founded Calvert Solicitors LLP, an entertainment law firm that has represented many stars and celebrities in several high profile cases.
