Kahlil Ameer Felder, popularly known as Kay Felder, is a professional basketball scorer associated with the Toronto Raptors of the Canadian Basketball League. The small lefty guard with explosive goal-scoring ability was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as the 54th overall score during the 2016 NBA draft. He has played for other top NBA teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Chicago Bulls, and the Detroit Pistons. The star has played in both the NBA Pro League and the NBA G-League. He completed his career as a colleague with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University.

Kay Felder’s Bio

Kay Felder was born Kahlil Ameer Felder Jr. to African American parents Kahlil Felder Sr. and his wife Tiffany Williams. He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1995 and celebrates his birthday every March 29th. Coming from a pedigree of basketball players, his father Felder played college-level basketball in eastern Michigan, while his cousin Steve Smith also played professionally for several NBA basketball teams. Felder began his basketball career while attending Pershing High School in Detroit, Michigan.

During his high school career, he led Pershing High School’s basketball team to win three state championship titles in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and in his senior year, he was named the most valuable player in the Public School League and also won the Mr. Basketball of Michigan Award. Felder was also named to the Detroit Free Press Dream Team and participated in the Michigan All-Star Game. While he was a respected athlete in high school, he also had an impressive academic record. He graduated with a 3.6-grade point average, earning him a place on the National Roll of Honor and Dean’s List. Felder also won the Detroit Public School’s Learner of the Year 2013.

Soon after graduating from high school, Felder enrolled at the University of Oakland, where he played for the Golden Grizzlies basketball team. He played as a point guard for the Grizzlies for three seasons until 2016. As a rookie, Kay Felder averaged 6.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 9.5 points per game. At the end of the season, he was appointed to the Horizon League All-Freshman team while receiving the league’s Freshman of the Year award. In his second year, Felder received 7.6 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 18.1 points per game. He was elected to the All-American Mid-Major Team, the All-Horizon League First Team, and was the only player in the country to score at least 7.0 assists and 17.0 points per game.

In his junior season, Kay broke the Horizon League record for career highlights and single-season assists. He won the Horizon League Player of the Week award six times in a row and at the end of the season, averaging 9.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 24.4 points per game. Kay was named Horizon League Player of the Year and was voted into the first team in the All-Horizon League. Felder announced that he would give up the last year of his college career to join the NBA Draft in 2016.

Professional Career Stats and Highlights

During the 2016 NBA draft combine, Kay Felder performed beautifully, and after the exercises, he was traded as a late runner-up. During the 2016 draft, he was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second draft round. He was the 54th player to be drafted this year. After the draft, Felder was immediately transferred to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

As a member of the Cavaliers’ squad, Felder participated in the 2016 NBA Summer League, whereupon he signed a two-year contract with the Cavaliers worth $2.4 million. He made his first professional appearance for the Cavaliers in the regular 2016/17 season on October 29, 2016, playing as a replacement for Kyrie Irvin and sharing most of his rookie season between the Cavaliers and their G-League partner Canton Charge.

In October 2017, Kay Felder was returned to the Hawks in exchange for Dimitrios Agravanis and Sergiy Gladyr, alongside Richard Jefferson and two future second-round matches. After the trade, the Hawks immediately gave up fields. He was subsequently recruited by the Chicago Bulls on October 16, 2017. He played a total of 14 games for the Bulls and also played for their G-League subsidiary Windy City Bulls. Felder scored an average of 1.4 assists, 1.0 rebounds, and 3.9 points per game on 14 missions for the Bulls. He was released from the Bulls in December 2017.

Kay Felder joined the Detroit Pistons on January 21, 2018; he was included in a two-way contract between the Pistons and their G-League subsidiary Grand Rapids Drive. Later, in August 2018, Felder signed a contract with the Toronto Raptors of the Canadian Basketball League.
