NBA analysts and enthusiasts alike can all agree that Kelly Oubre Jnr has the body of a prototypical NBA wing player with outstanding length and athleticism. This has garnered the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft comparisons with players like Paul George and Trevor Ariza, but the former University of Kansas star might find himself running out of time if he doesn’t grow to become what everybody thinks he will be. Here’s a breakdown of how far he has come.

Oubre was born Kelly Paul Oubre II to Kelly Oubre and Tonya Coleman on the 9th of December 1995 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was raised in the crime-riddled Magnolia Projects before his family was able to move to the Eastover section of the town as he was getting into his teens.

The lad attended Edward Hynes Elementary School where he was noted as one of the most talented basketball players in his class. The young athlete also played for the three New Orleans Recreation Development Commission basketball teams before he had to move to Texas in order to get away from the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. In Texas, Oubre attended George Bush High School in Fort Bend before transferring to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada for his senior high school year where his performances earned him McDonald’s and Parade All-American selections.

After graduating high school, Oubre accepted a scholarship offer to attend the University of Kansas. In his freshman year, he earned two Big 12 Newcomer of the Week awards as he went on to average 9.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1,1 steals per game in 36 games. At the end of the year, Kelly Oubre Jnr garnered the All-Newcomer Team and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors. He subsequently announced he was forgoing his remaining college years to enter the 2015 NBA Draft.

On draft night, Kelly Oubre Jnr was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 15th overall pick but was however immediately traded to the Washington Wizards for another player and two second-round draft picks. Oubre went ahead to put pen to paper on a four-year rookie contract worth $9.2 million. He then joined the team for the 2015 Las Vegas Summer League where he played in six games and averaged 16.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Oubre went into his rookie year in the NBA with the hopes of making a significant impact that could lead to him making the All-Star Weekend’s Rising Star competition or at least the NBA All-Rookie second team at the end of the season. That did not go as planned as he only averaged 3.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 63 games. His highlight of the season was an 18-point outing against the San Antonio Spurs.

Kelly Oubre Jnr’s poor showing in his rookie season prompted him to rejoin the Wizards for the 2016 NBA Summer League where he earned All-NBA Summer League Second Team honors. He went on to average 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in 79 games. His highlights of the season were a double-double effort against the Sacramento Kings and a 19-points, 9-rebounds game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Oubre enjoyed a breakout year in the 2017-18 season where he averaged 11.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game in 81 games. In one of those games against the Detroit Pistons, he managed a career-high 26 points.

Why Was He Suspended?

Kelly Oubre Jnr has had a few run-ins with the National Basketball Association, one of which led to his suspension. Oubre’s first offense came in November 2015 in a game against the San Antonio Spurs. The rookie was seen making an obscene gesture which led to him being fined $15,000.

Almost two years later, in a playoff game in which the Wizards were being blown out by the Boston Celtics, Oubre lost his cool and shoved Kelly Olynyk to the ground. He was immediately ejected from the game and it was later announced by the NBA’s VP of basketball operations that he would be suspended for one game for what was officially said to be charging and making forceful and unwarranted contact in a dead ball situation.

Kelly Oubre Jnr has an impressive height of 6 feet 7 inches or 2.01 m even though he turns out to be the shortest forward position player on his team. He further weighs about 205 pounds or 93 kg and has a wingspan of 7 feet 2 inches or 2.2 m.
