The actor was born Kevin Delaney Kline on October 24, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri. Of both German and Irish descent, Kline was raised by his father, Robert Joseph Kline, who was an amateur opera singer, a record store operator – The Record Bar, and a mother whom he described as very dramatic.
With two younger brothers and an older sister, he grew up in the Catholic Faith and attended the Saint Louis Priory School in 1965. He began acting since he was in school, appearing in many plays. Nonetheless, he was more interested in music at the time. Because of this, he decided to study composing and conducting at the Indiana University, Bloomington.
Two years into his studies in college, the acting side of him became stronger than the music and so he moved to theater and speech which he continued until his graduation in 1970. Before he graduated, he co-founded an off-campus theatrical troupe, Vest Pocket Players.
From there, he moved to Juilliard School in New York where he attended the Drama Division which was newly formed. There, he became a part of the City Center Acting Company (The Acting Company), which traveled around performing Shakespeare’s plays among other things.
After leaving the company, he got his first acting role in the 1986 soap opera, Search for Tomorrow and then The Time of Your Life in the same year. He would go on to appear in more TV shows including Cyrano de Bergerac (2008) and Bob’s Burgers (2011- ) for which he is doing voice acting for Mr. Calvin Fischoeder.
More than on TV, he has handled more film roles in movies like Sophie’s Choice (1982), The Pirates of Penzance (1983), and A Fish Called Wanda (1988). His other movies are The Last of Robin Hood (2013), Ricki and the Flash (2015), Dean (2016), and Beauty and the Beast (2017).
With over 60 movies, plays, and TV shows to his name for various things including acting, voice acting, and directing, Kline has many awards to show for all the hard work including multiple Drama Desk Awards, Tony Awards, Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Screen Actors Guild. What she got, however, was the opportunity to meet the man who would go on to be her husband, Kevin Kline.
