There is a disproven claim which argues that popular musicians, artists, and actors are most likely to die at the age of 27. People like Jimi Hendrix, , and Jean-Michel Basquiat among many others, had all met their demise at that age before musician Kurt Cobain, best known as the guitarist and frontman of the rock band Nirvana joined the list.

Like those aforementioned, Cobain is regarded as being one of the most talented, iconic, and influential musicians in history, thanks to the role he played in popularizing alternative rock music. Read on to find out more about his life and death.

Kurt Cobain Biography (Age) 

On February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington, Kurt Donald Cobain was welcomed into the world. He was born to Wendy Elizabeth (née Fradenburg) and Donald Leland Cobain. His mother was a waitress while his father was an automotive mechanic.

From a very young age, Cobain developed an interest in arts and music, as he would draw his favorite film and cartoon characters and also sing. By the time he turned four, he was said to have started playing the piano and writing songs about his visit to a local park. At the age of 14, the young boy was said to have been offered either a bike or a guitar by his uncle, to which he chose a guitar.

Amid his parents’ divorce, Cobain carried on perfecting his musical ability all through his teenage years, forming the band Fecal Matter as he attended Aberdeen High School. He, however, dropped out two weeks prior to his graduation because he did not have enough credits to graduate. This prompted his mother to kick him out. The young man went on to live with friends before being able to get his own apartment.

In the following years, Kurt Cobain, who had formed the group Nirvana with Krist Novoselic, found it hard finding a drummer as they underwent an unsuccessful tour which made him disillusioned with his music career. The duo later hired drummer Chad Channing and they recorded the album Bleach. After Channing left the group, Nirvana enjoyed mainstream success as they hired drummer Dave Grohl who helped them popularize a subgenre of alternative rock called “grunge” as they released the album Nevermind in 1991.

For the last two years of his life, Kurt Cobain was married to singer and actress . There are conflicting reports on how and when exactly the pair first met each other, however, it is known to be sometime between 1989 and 1991.

According to Love, she first met her future husband in 1989 at a Dharma Bums show in Portland, Oregon where they briefly talked and she developed a crush on him. The pair was again said to have been formally introduced to each other in Los Angeles in May 1991 at an L7 and Butthole Surfers concert. Following this meeting, Love began pursuing Cobain and the two bonded over their mutual interests that included drug use.

By late 1991, Cobain and Love became a couple and they went on to exchange marital vows on February 24, 1992, on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. Love notably wore a satin and lace dress while her husband wore pajamas. At the time of their wedding, Love was already pregnant for the couple’s only a child, a daughter named Frances Bean Cobain who was born August 18, 1992.

Death

Throughout his time in the spotlight, Kurt Cobain was known to be a heavy drug user. According to reports, he first smoked marijuana at the age of 13, before slowly moving on to use numerous other hallucinogenic and opioid medications. By the late 1980s, the singer started using heroin sporadically and by the end of 1990, he developed an addiction to the drug.

In March 1994, Cobain was diagnosed with bronchitis and severe laryngitis. While seeking medical treatment, he attempted suicide by overdosing on a combination of champagne and Rohypnol and had to spend about a week to recover before being sent home. In the following days, he continued to show suicidal tendencies that prompted his wife to call the police to their home. She later arranged an intervention for his drug use, prompting him to agree to undergo a detox program.

After checking into a facility in Los Angeles, Cobain abandoned the program and escaped by jumping over its 6-feet-high fence. He was said to have taken a cab to the airport to fly back home to Seattle but never actually went home. He was spotted in various places across town but neither his wife nor his friends knew of his whereabouts.

On April 8, 1994, the Nirvana frontman was found dead at his Lake Washington Boulevard home by an electrician who came to install a security system. According to the coroner’s reports, Kurt Cobain, who was said to have died a few days prior to his discovery, estimated to be on April 5, 1994, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. A high concentration of heroin and traces of diazepam were found in his body.

Kurt Cobain, who was known for his distinctive features such as a pair of blue eyes, natural dark brown hair that was often dyed numerous colors, and a lanky body frame, stood at a height of 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm). He further weighed about 63 kg (139 lbs).
