Being a star, she is undoubtedly magic and filled us with wonder and awe. The young Romanian-American opera singer finished in 6th place.

Laura Bretan Biography, Age

The songbird was born on April 7, 2002, in Chicago, Illinois to a Romanian family. Clearly born with an amazing voice that finds its way into the hearts of anyone that ever hears it, her mother recognized such a rare talent and started helping her hone her skills. Also, she encouraged her to join the church choir, Elim Romanian Pentecostal Church at the age of 4.

The first song she ever sang before an audience was Silent Night and from there, Laura started her journey to a greater discovery of the instrument she possesses, an amazing voice. Laura also realized she can explore different genres of music and sing in different ways after she saw Disney’s The Sleeping Beauty. She was so enamored by the songs in the movie that she took to learning and singing every one of them. Her career took off when she was 6 and since then, her prowess has only grown by leaps and bounds.

Laura fell in love with classical music and has been an aspiring opera singer ever since. Thus, she began taking voice lessons at the age of 12 and committed to learning arias from operas. Giacomo Puccini and Andrew Lloyd Webber are her favorite composers.  She also studies canto with Nicoleta Roman, a Romanian lyric artist at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition to opera, she enjoys singing contemporary Christian music.

With her music empire growing, she entered auditions and contested in shows. Amazingly, Laura Bretan not only auditioned but always comes out among the best. Some of the competitions she has won include Super Top Dog (for children aged under 14), and Stars of Tomorrow. Besides singing in competitions, she performed the national anthem for Chicago White Sox at US Cellular Field in Chicago in 2014.

Laura Bretan believes that with her voice, she can touch people’s lives and inspire others, especially teenagers, to enjoy opera, though one of the most complex forms of art, as much as she does.

Career and Rise to Fame

One of her biggest fans, ever before she became known to us, her grandfather convinced her to compete in Romania’s Got Talent. In 2016, she took the shot and participated in the 6th season of the contest. At the auditions, she sang a piece of opera initially written for male performance and was effortlessly amazing, impressing both the jury and the audience. Her performance also got her a Super Golden Buzzer from the presenters. That automatically shot her into the final where she emerged the winner, beyond her wildest imaginations, and shot her into the limelight.

With her newfound fame, Laura decided to test deeper waters. Being a US citizen, she took the chance to enter as an opera singer in season 11 of America’s Got Talent. Opera has a way of getting listeners arrested in a way no other performance can and she surely knew how to nail it.

Already accustomed to wowing her audience and enthralling the jury, she reiterated her exceptionalism during the auditions where she performed Nessun Dorma from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot. As expected, her act received a standing ovation from the jury who was equally effusive with their praise. The judges consist, of Simon Cowell whose snarky demeanor she cracked, Heidi Klum, former Spice Girl Mel B, and Howie Mandel. Furthermore, her performance moved Mel B to press her Golden Buzzer, the first of the season, sending her straight to the quarterfinals.

She scaled through successfully with amazing performances which never failed to hold her listeners spellbound. Some of the pieces she sang were Pie Jesu, her grandfather’s favorite, and The Prayer which has been performed by music icons like Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, and Michael Bolton. Bretan eventually got to the finals where she sang O Mio Babbino Caro, the soprano’s aria from Puccini’s opera Gianni Schicchi. She finished in 6th place, at only 14 with a fellow youngster, Grace Vanderwaal winning the contest. Although her performance didn’t get her into the final five or the winner’s circle, it was phenomenal enough to strike a chord with the viewers.

Fame, however, comes with its innuendos. With her emergence in the top 10, she divided the classical music world. While some laud her performance and are elated to see classical music reach a wider audience, others were quick to express their displeasure with her technique and choice of repertoire. Some experienced vocal teachers opined that the manner in which Bretan sang, which was more like mimicking older voices, is improper for her young age. They further explained that it could pose a great risk of losing her amazing voice because of forcing her tender vocal cords.

Despite the issues her voice raises and concerns over her performance and future as a singer, we will be watching her career with interest.
