Lil Peep who was described as a SoundCloud rapper and an emo rapper was an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was known for being a part of the post-emo revival style of hip-hop. He described music as a channel for expressing the part of himself he doesn’t show on social media, the part that suffers depression and anxiety. His death sparked up the conversation about addiction and mental health.

Lil Peep was born on November 1, 1996, as Gustav Elijah Åhr, in Pennsylvania and grew up on Long Island, New York. He was of Irish, German and Swedish descent. He attended Long Beach High School in Lido Beach, New York, and made good grades even getting his name on the dean’s list. But he doesn’t like going to school and so he dropped out, taking online courses to earn his diploma. Knowing that he was destined to do something creative, he began posting his music on YouTube and SoundCloud and garnered a large audience. He was going to try his hands on things like fashion and acting.

He moved to Los Angeles at 17 and began to record his own songs. In 2015, he released his debut mixtape, Lil Peep Part One, and two full-length mixtapes: Crybaby and Hellboy in 2016. He released his first album, Come Over When You’re Sober (Part One) on August 15, 2017. He worked on a contract with First Access Entertainment writing songs and doing public performances and was managed by Chase Ortega.

Death

Lil Peep was already beginning to make waves in the music industry and still had a long way to go. His death which occurred on November 15, 2017, in his tour bus, in Tuscan, Arizona came as a shock to thousands of fans and the hip-hop community. He posted on his Instagram page about his use of drugs, though he said the substances didn’t help and advised against drug use.

The cause of his death was suspected to be a drug overdose but was confirmed by a report on TMZ.com which stated that he died of combined toxic effects of fentanyl and alprazolam. His manager was the first to confirm his death via a tweet that said he has been expecting Peep’s death for a year.

His family and friends gathered on November 20 at A.L. Jacobsen’s Funeral Home in Huntington Station. His body was cremated and his ashes buried in a private service in the place where he said he felt most at home.

A memorial service that was well attended was held in his honor at Long Beach, New York on December 2, 2017. His grandmother, Jerry Kastner gave a speech followed by his mother. Colleagues and friends also gave speeches in his honor. His fans described him as unique and praised him for his uniqueness.

Stars like Diplo, Post Malone, Bella Thorne, Lil Uzi Vert, and DJ Marshmello some of whom he looked up to took to Twitter to mourn the rapper and praise his great tributes. He had huge ambition and a flourishing career and his death left many a broken heart including that of Sarah Stennett, the CEO of First Access Entertainment.

Peep came out as bisexual in August 2017 saying it takes bravery and confidence to come open on that. There was no recorded affair with a guy, though he enjoyed a close professional connection with his manager. He dated actress and singer, Bella Thorne who posted a heartfelt tribute to him on Twitter the day after his death.

In September 2017, he began dating social media sensation, Arzaylea Rodriguez from Austin, Texas. Her father has been in the music industry and owns the company, Tunes Headphones. Arzaylea was formerly involved with the lead singer of the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer, Luke Hemmings. They dated for a while but broke up in May 2017.

Lil Peep’s Family: Mother, Brother

Peep was born to his father, Karl Johan Ahr, who has Swedish and German roots, and his mother, Liza K. Womack with Irish and German ancestry. His parents divorced when he was in his teens and both were Harvard graduates. His father is a college professor and his mother, a first-grade teacher at Birch Elementary School in Merrick.

He had an elder brother, Karl ‘Oskar’ Áhr who is 23, and a silky terrier, Taz, which he spent more time with while writing his songs. There is also a maternal grandmother, Jerry Kastner, grandfather, and many cousins.

He talked about his mother a lot and said she is very proud of him and his success. His mother relayed the struggles the young lad had to face. She said her son faced rejection from the people who only saw him from the outside and never for who he really is. She said her son got fed up with the world and rejected it because of its various forms of societal prejudice.

His mother was evidently touched by his death as she took to her Instagram page to pour eulogies on her son. Jerry described her son as a stubborn, driven, talented, crafty, observant, and tender young man who is also vulnerable and lived his own life on his own terms.

His brother believed in him and said that Peep accomplished a lot in his short time on earth, something most people never get to do in their entire lifetime. He called his brother’s death an accident stating that Peep took some sort of substance he did not expect to be in the one he was taking.
