Lincoln Riley Bio, Age

Riley was born in Lubbock, Texas on the 5th of September 1983. He attended Muleshoe High School, West Texas where he began his high school career as a defensive end and would later switch to quarterback during his junior and senior seasons. After high school, Lincoln Riley began his college career at Texas Tech University as a walk-on, playing the QB position behind future Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury, who was a senior starter at the time and B. J. Symons who was the then back-up.

After his first year with the team, he became a student assistant to Mike Leach, who was the team’s head coach at the time, with time he was promoted to graduate assistant coach and then to receivers coach. After coach Leach was fired, Riley headed to East Carolina University where he served five seasons as an offensive coordinator under coach Ruffin McNeill.

During his tenure with the team, his players did very well. Receiver Justin Hardy broke Ryan Broyles’ record for most receptions in a career and finished his 4 years college career at East Carolina with a total of three hundred and eighty-seven (387) receptions against Broyles’ three hundred and forty-nine. Two years after this, Zay Jones, another receiver who was Riley recruit broke the record yet again with a total of three hundred and ninety-nine catches.

At the expiration of his five seasons at East Carolina, he was hired by Bob Stoop as Oklahoma Sooners’ new offensive coordinator. He began his career with the team on a very impressive note, leading the Sooners to the College Football Playoff. He strengthened the team’s offence side which was lagging the previous year, leading them to emerge 7th best offence in the country.

The team also came in at the 4th position in scoring and number seven in yards per game in 2015. He would later win the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach of the year.

In June 2017, coach Rob retired and Lincoln Riley was announced to replace him as the team’s new head coach and in that same year, Riley, together with Baker Mayfield, led the Sooners to the Big 12 conference championship, taking the No.2 position in the CFP rankings, and they made it to the semifinal games at the Rose Bowl. At the 2018 edition of the game, they made it to the finals but lost to Georgia in double overtime 54–48.

His Salary

In June 2018, Lincoln Riley signed a contract extension with the team that will keep him with the club until the end of 2023, the contract came with a $1.7 million raise which increased his annual salary to $4.8 million in its first year with a $100,000 increase every 12 months, thus, bringing his annual pay to an average of about $5 million per year.

Many, however, believe the extension and the whopping amount was the team’s way of keeping Riley longer at Oklahoma as Stoops’ successor, and that is really not far from the truth.
